Truck wont start... clicking....

my truck makes a rapid clicking sound when try to crank it over. sometimes it even does it when i just turn the key to turn on the heating grid. i cleaned my batterey connections everything is tight. it happens randomly. sometimes if i leave it and come back it will start sometimes it wont...
HELP!!

starter solenoid.... could be a bad wire inside, or the contact ring...can't remember who has the heavy duty contacts. solenoid has 2 windings... 1 for pull in, 2 for hold in, if it's not holding, it will click rapid. someone else will probably chime in.

Sounds like the starter contacts. Try a search for STARTER and CONTACTS and you will get tons of information on what to do and where to get new ones..

Here is what the contacts look like after 170K. Easy to replace.



The one on the left is positive, the right negative. (I think)
