truck won't start at all

My buddy's got a 1996 chevy 2500 with the 6.5 liter and all it will do is crank and not turn over. we have changed the glow plugs, fuel filter, plugged it in for a full day and all it still does is crank and thats it now there is smoke coming back through the intake tube after trying to start it. I need help bad we need to get this thing running.

I believe with the 96 you need a scanner.

Probably best to hit one of the Chevy specific forums, dieselpage or dieselstop, don't remember which.
