This morning when I fired up the truck it cranked for about 10 seconds before it started. It usually fires right up. I drove to the convience store, shut it off and then tried to restart and nothing. It cranks fast but does not fire. I cranked for about 10-15 seconds, then waited, cranked again, and again, and again. Finally it started and ran fine. I drove it home, shut it off and tried to restart it just to see if it would work and it would not. Any ideas? Bad lift pump maybe?

 

Sounds like a bad lift pump or worse a VP44 going bad. One quick way to check the lift pump is the open the water drain valve and turn the key on. It should pump a lot of fuel out of the drain hose. If not it's probably the lift pump. You really need to test the pressure from the pump if possible.

 

My guess is the crank position sensor is nackered.<br><br>bob.

 

I opened the valve to drain out the water and I hafe fuel there, but I have no idea on pressure. Please give me more info on this crank position sensor. I have never heard of it. What do I need to check?

95 has a shutdown solenoid that sometimes hangs up, don't know what shutdown arrangement is on yours, but its worth a look.

 

I am not positive but I don't think it is the CPS. The Tach works fine. According to what I read if the CPS went south my tach would not be working properly. As to the shutdown down solenoid I have no idea on that one. Where do I look? What really gets me about this problem is that it comes and goes. Right now if I tried to start my truck it wouldn't but if I jacked with it for a while turning the key off and on and tried to crank it several times eventually I could get it to go. Then it would be running just fine but if I shut it off and tried to restart it a second later it probably would not start.

 

Did you get the codes read? <br>Maybe someone can chime in on how to do this on a 2001. ( I think it's about cycling ignition on off 5 times- then read the codes in the odometer or by flashes of the check engine light ??? )<br>Good luck!<br>AlpineRAM

 

I checked for codes and it is not showing any.

 

bdog<br>Just a suggestion- Mine did something similar to what yours is doing and it turned out to be a loose fuel line on top of the fuel filter. I found it one day when I was changing the filter and bumped the line and it moved. I tightened the bolt and it is good now.<br>Tom

 

Thanks for the reply Tom. I will go out and check that as wells as look for loose connections elsewhere.<br><br>Still sitting at home with a broke down truck. I was really liking my dodge but with my old truck at least when it broke down I was able to figure out the problem and fix it myself.

Is this problem fixed yet? I do believe I have the solution, correctly.

 

It is fixed. the dealer found a weak injection pump and replaced it under warranty at 67k miles.
