truck dies

I am working on a 97 12v right now and I am having a few problems hope one of you folks can help me with
#1 in park truck idles fine in park 780 -800 rpm may be a little low without a load

#2 truc wll rev with now aparent misses, but no black smoke at full throttle in park but I not use to stock trucks for this may be normal

#3 when truck is placed into drive or reverse it will die like within .5 sec.

#4 replaced fuel filter with no luck of fixing the problem.

I have never seen this problem could it be the shut off silinoid? lift pump or overflow valve?

thanks folks for your help in advance

Re:truck dies

Adjust the idle speed. The idle speed with an automatic is supposed to be adjusted at 800-850 rpm in drive with the air conditioner on. This results in 900-950 rpm in neutral and no air. The idle speed bolt and lock nut are at the bottom rear of the pump.

Re:truck dies

Well, guys I turned the idle up as sugested with no luck. When the truck is in nuetral or park the tach reads 1200, and when placed in gear in is stumbling at 550 - 600 rpm. I did notice while driving the truck it seems down on power also.

Slipped timing? Overflow valve under fuel return fitting on injection pump?

Re:truck dies

You might also check that the fuel shutdown solenoid is all
the way up when the truck is running. I just had a low power
problem where I couldn't get more than about 8 lbs. of boost,
and had EGTs that wouldn't go above 750 pre-turbo. Turned out
that the solenoid was slipping off the arm it's supposed to be
connected to, then it fell apart completely. I was able to
take the pieces and put it back together. It's working as it
should now, but it seemed like I had a fuel pressure problem,
or maybe a plugged filter at first. Hope this helps.
