Truck died

While driving. truck stuttered slightly, then ran for a couple of more miles, then went dead. I thought fuel, so I put 5 gallons in and made the gauge move. When I turn the key on, I don't hear the lift pump buzz. No check engine light. haven't checked codes yet. Any thoughts at this point? I will check codes tomorrow morn and post them.

Thanks,
B

Do a search for lift pump or VP44, you will find a lot of reading. A fuel pressure gauge is needed on the 24v so you know when your pump is failing. Hope all it needs is a lift pump.

That ain't no lie..........

I see ur running a superchips boonemaxwell. I am borrowing a friends an on the highest setting I can pull my fuel pressure down to 6 psi on a 2 week old pump which borderline. Before I loaded up the superchips the last pump just quit while driving down the road and I always carry a spare. I would say that your lp is dead if you can't hear it and you possibly damaged or terminated your ip.
GOOD LUCK.

I have FP gauge. In general I can't make it go below 11-12 at WOT. I didn't get a look at it when it died.

...sure sounds like the LP went sideways; Before you run out and buy a new one - or, better yet, UPGRADE - you should run through the wiring, make sure it's not an open or bad connection somewhere (I work with a guy who's car would not start Mon evening - turns out some critters had chewed through a wire bundle running into the steering column)....

Update

Checked codes with diag function of SuperChips tuner. Got nothing. I then returned it to "Stock". It just cranks over with nothing else happening. Is there a logical method to start figuring out where the fuel flow is failing?

Thanks,
B.

If you can not hear the fuel pump when you "bump" the starter, it is probably gone. If you can hear it, crack the fuel line where it goes into the VP44 and see if fuel is getting through the filter. If you get fuel to the VP44, then crack the fuel lines at injectors 3 and 5. If you get fuel to the VP44, but not at the injectors, the VP is probably shot.

Also, just for grins, disconnect both batteries and turn the key on for 30 minutes. Turn the key off and reconnect. This might reset something that's in the wrong position.

LP is definitely running after starter bump. It seems to be free spinning though. Sound is definitely not the loud grinding tone I am used to. It is more of a humm. Hopefully it's an air leak or the LP shaft broke.

So is your FP gauge reading pressure or not?

If the pump is (trying to) run, and there's no pressure at your gauge - replace the LP!

I am an idiot. I guess I just ran out of fuel and the pump needed priming. The gauge read right on empty and I know I have had it completely below empty before......Oh well, thanks for all of the help guys, I really appreciate it.
