truck died and codes present

Today while driving my truck died twice. It was just like someone shut off the key. After cranking for a while I was able to get it restarted and when it is running it runs fine. When I got home I checked and it is giving the following codes:

0500 No VSS signal
1693 DTC deteced in companion module DTC detected in PCM/ECM

Any ideas on what this means? Is there something I can check to fix or am I in for a trip to the dealer?
The P1693 just means that a code was set in the ECM as well.
It usually follows any code set in the PCM.

Yes, the VSS is the vehicle speed sensor, and that code was set in the PCM.

I believe the VSS is on top of the rear differential.
You might try cleaning it, making sure it isn't sticking down to far, or replacing it.

That's the extent of my knowledge.

phox

Re:truck died and codes present

I had both those codes come up on my truck.

I was told from a dodge Mechanic that the 500 code was a Vehicle Speed Sensor that was located on the transmission(auto, not sure about a stick) on the left side just infront of the transfer case. I went and bought a new one and replaced it, what I did notice when I removed the old one was I found some metal on the tip of the sensor which has a magnet in it which could have been causing the the VSS to give false readings. I just installed this part so I am not sure if its going to help or not, we will have to wait and see.

If I am not mistaken the sensor on the rear diff gives speed readings and if its gone bad will show up on the speedometer with false readings or no readings at all.

P.S I had a bad lift pump as well . ( waiting for the VP44$$ to grenade now) New truck may be in order.. :

Re:truck died and codes present

My speedo and tach work fine, even when the truck dies. I am now thinking the codes and my problem are unrelated. The truck died today 5 times and I am at a loss as to what it is so tomorrow it goes in to the dealer.
