Transfer pump?

Okay so for whatever reason I was reading about the 03-04.5 transfer pump Geno's sells. I noticed that it said the factory pump is good for about 80-120K. I thought wow I have 121K on my truck hope I don't have problems, that was Friday afternoon and in the 2.5 years I have had the truck never a problem with anything. Yesterday she starts and then dies, starts again and dies, then won't start at all. It's been cold here in the 20's I know nothing like the temps up north but cold for lower Alabama. I changed the fuel filter, it was ugly, but not terrible. One thing I noticed when I pulled it was the lack of fuel in the bowl (none). Just to see if the pump has a problem I turned on the key to see if the bowl would fill up, it didn't, but I can hear the pump running, well at least I think it's the pump, last's for maybe a minute when the key is turned on? I also tried to check for codes after turning the key on three times it says "done" ------ and then displays the miles. Any advice, opinions, or stories would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

If your LP is mounted on the fuel filter canister you should be able to tell if it's working or not. When key is cycled you should be able to see fuel pumping into the canister but if not then I'd say it's time to join the failed LP club.

Do you have a fuel pressure guage? If not I'd go ahead and order that and a pyro along with the LP...they are cheap insurance for what they could save you later on down the road!!!

With the key on there is noise from the pump but no fuel entering the bowl. It is the pump mounted on the fuel filter canister. I don't have any gauges besides the stock in dash stuff, and I had been considering, just not sure what one's i really need, no plans for any mods to increase HP. So any thoughts on location of aftermarket gauges and brands to consider? Thanks for the information.

Kevin,

Did you ever figure this out? I tried to post yesterday but had to wait on my account to activate. I had a an issue with my truck (bone stock 2006) a couple of weeks ago. I had 1/8 tank fuel left and I pulled in the fuel station and it went dead before I even got to the pumps and would not start back up. Removed the fuel filter and could see that it was not getting fuel. I pushed it to the fuel pump filled it up and it's been fine since. I was told that the sock on the bottom of my lift pump may have been "gummed" up. I started running some fuel additive through it and haven't had the problem since. Just a thought. If anyone out there disagrees with this diagnoses please let me know. I would hate to get down the road later and figure out I was wrong.

Yesterday after work I disconnected the fuel line at the quick disconnect underneath and fuel was flowing like crazy(all over my arm), so I went ahead and ordered a new pump from geno's last night. The truck has 121,512 miles on it so I guess it was due. Thanks for all of the sugestions.

Don't, there's a good chance they will send you what they think you need and ship it how they want to.

Been there, done that ~ TWICE! . . . I'm just saying.

Haven't dealt with Diesel Manor, but what I ordered from Geno's yesterday at 6pm(CST) will be here tomorrow. I am very happy with them.

How much fuel did you put in the tank when it quit?

Your fuel guage could be wrong and you ran out of fuel or your pickup in the tank could be high in the tank. If I were you I would not trust the guage and not allow the fuel to go below 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank until you can check it out.

She runs!!

Okay the new pump from Geno's was on the front porch when I got home from work. Put it on and she runs like a champ. Seems like she's running better than ever, that may be because I've been stuck driving my wife's Prius while the truck was out of commission. Thank's to all for the helpful advice.
