transfer pump
transfer pump
Can somebody clarify this for me please, went to the ******* yesterday to get the high idle done that part is fine. They also found out that the cam sensor was faulty but i knew about that, the question is that the scan came up with the transfer pump being out of range as per manual they performed a pressure test, and mesure resistance = high resistance .Recommend replacement 400.00$ parts, is the transfer pump in any way connected to the cam sensor and would give out a bad scan on tranfer pump.
Re:transfer pump
Transfer pumps are a suspect item on all 24 valxe trucks. >
The transfer pump transfers the fuel from the tank to the injection pump,as the name suggests. I'm not sure of all the reasons, and there are a few, but these pumps don't seem to last very long and if they are not replaced often they will ruin the injection pump, causing the service price tag to increase significantly! I believ emost guys around here are installing a pressure guage on the fuel system to monitor it at all times and the hardcore guys are installing a completely different pump with great success.
Tony

Re:transfer pump
I wouldn't think that the transfer pump and the cam sensor had anything to do with each other. But,,,, don't quote me because I don't have a service manual, however it's just my opinion and maybe someone else can tell you for sure.
The one thing that I have been told,,,, is that the tranfer pump is covered under the 5 year/100K warranty. This is what I was told by a dealer after they checked my VIN and all I have to do is make an appointment to get it checked. If it is bad, they said they will replace it under warranty. Just my $.02
Re:transfer pump
For starters I hope they're not trying to get you to pay for the lift pump replacement as it should be covered by warranty.(100,000 miles on the Cummins).
The lift pump goes for around $300 at Dodge, and around $150 from Cummins. It takes about an hour to replace it.
As for the issue of the cam sensor affecting the lift pump readings, I don't think they're related.
The lift pumps are well know as a weak point of the Cummins injection system on the 24 Valve engines, and a Fuel Pressure guage is a must have and should be on them from the factory. :

Mopar number is 5080885aa however last one they put on my truck was a 5015723AC ///// The cummins no is 3990105 The shop time or flat rate calls for .7 hour for replacement . As you are out of luck for a "freebe" due to mileage you may want to consider changing it out yourself as it is pretty simple to do. Look or search for more info as there are alternatives to the factory pumps . Be aware that some have reported that too much pressure at start up can cause hard starting. Research a lot befor leaping into a big Killer pump as pumping WAY too much fuel at high pressures can allso cause problems with the Injection pump, which is what you are trying to SAVE ! ! Yes it would be nice if Dodge would own up to making a mistake but We know the Corporate world is going to continue sticking it to the consumer.
Re:transfer pump
Buy the Holley Black Changeover Kit from Rod at Wildcat. Not only do you get 3/8"-1/2" (can't remember) inside diameter hose, you also get extra large banjo's and all of the clamps and parts you'll need to install the thing. Plus you get Rod's expert help. My second lift pump was 13 at idle and 6 at WOT. After the Holley, 16.6 at idle and 13 at WOT. If you decide to get the Holley, remove the bypass valve and shoot some brake cleaner up in it and run some emery paper LIGHTLY over the plunger. My bypass valve was stuck open and I would only get 8 psi at idle and 6 at WOT. After cleaning that, I had the above mentioned pressures.
