Tranny/Xfer case locking up?

My neighbor has the same truck as mine, only it is a 2001 (see my sig). He is having trouble with his tranny or xfer case, we don't really now. He tells me that sometimes he gets into his truck and it won't move. He can put it in any gear and let out on the clutch and it bogs the motor and won't try to move. He said one time he nudged the xfer case shifter and it fixed the problem. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong. He was driving it last night, but has this trouble about every other day or so. Remember, this is a farm truck with a Hydr-Bed on it. It feeds hay bales and gets the crap worked out of it. Any ideas? How much should a new tranny or xfer case cost if he needs one? Dodge told him the tranny was $5000 IF they could get one.

Thanks for any ideas.

Its possible that the transfer case is wore interally and is getting stuck in low and high range at the same time.

I don't know much about the innards of these things, but seems like it couldn't get caught in both at the same time since the positions are on the opposite end of the shifting patter. But then again, I don't know. Seems like if it was broke, it would stop. It just gets broke until it finds a sweet spot and then drives for a little while. Strange. Not a bug, a hidden feature.

While I was away for 6 months, I let one of my employees use my truck. He said he was driving down the hiway at 60 mph and the truck bucked real hard and quit forward movement with the go pedal. He pulled over and the transfer case was pouring fluid out. He crawled under it and saw that the transfer case was literally cracked in half. Something bound up the chain inside it and went boom. It took 2 weeks and 3500 bucks to locate a reconditioned unit......

Good Luck and get it to a shop b4 it lets go!!!
