Tranny wakes up slow...
Tranny wakes up slow...
We don't drive "the beast" very often. Only used to drag the horse around and run to the lumber yard every so often.
When I first start him up and get ready to go, I drop it in to drive and step on the "gas" and he sits... thinking about it... and then he decides to go. Could be 5 seconds or so... doesn't matter it I floor it or not. At no other time does he do this- and I have to say, it's rare he gets driven 2 days in a row, so I can't say if it happens on the second day.
Any bright ideas or things to try?
Thanks,
Steve

Sounds like a drainback valve in the cooler line stuck. I remove them on all of my trucks anyhow. The have been known to stick shut and burn up trannies! Ouch! Try putting the truck in neutral for a few seconds before putting it in gear. The trannies in these don't flow fluid in park, but they will in neutral. If putting it in neutral seems to let it go right into gear, I would say either replace the check valve i nthe line, or remove it like I do, and learn to adjust your startup procedure to compensate!
I had the same problem with my 2500. First drive in the morning or after sitting for 10 hrs after work, I would put it into drive and it would go no where. I would have to put it into neutral and back into drive 2 or 3 times before it would move. Took it to the dealer and they opened up the bottom of the tranny and the oil pump inside was in their words "shredded". They put a new oil pump in and sent me on my way. Now I wonder if they got all of the shavings out of it. I sure don't have the problem in the morning or after it sits for 10 hrs any more. Just worried about the future problems. Your problem sounds an awful lot like mine.

Well, I hat to be the one to break this to ya, but the tranny fluid pump is in the front of the tranny! The trans has to be removed to replace it. There is no way to even see it by taking the pan off!
This has been happening with torqueflight derivative trannies for a long time. The "drainback" valve was introduced to help alleviate this issue for short term (few days), but some over longer times will drain back. Waaaayyyy back in the 727 days (which our 47's 48's still resemble in many ways) it was actually stated in owners manuals that you may have to idle in neutral to fill the converter.
....and since I work on these from time to time I eliminated the check valve on my truck long ago.

vzdude... They did have to take the tranny out of my truck to replace it. It did solve my problem of not going into gear right away. They saw the shavings when they took the pan off.

I didn't notice any. Just when I would come out in the morning or after it sat for 10 hrs while I was at work. Would have to put it in to neutral then into drive 3 or 4 times before it would jerk into gear. I didn't notice any other problems before I took it in. I just don't know how they would get all the steel shavings out of the tranny with out completely rebuilding it. Now I'm waiting for other problems to develope hopefully before the warranty expires!

You'll often, to some degree, see "shavings" when you drop the pan. Again...just like your other post, without seeing what was there, you really can't make the call. Speaking from experience I say drive it like you stole it. Every mile you put on it will drive your mind further from thinking of this.
....and I'm thinking it must have been fairly clean because you take a beating on warranty time for just a pump replacement. At least you can break even or make some coin if you go for the "clean, inspect, re-seal" repair.
