slow tranny

Curious, I was looking in the general info area and saw a question asked by a owner moving to Alaska. One of the reccomendations for warm ups was to put the trans,(auto only) into the neutral position, then shift into forward a couple of times. This would keep reverse from acting "sluggish" I belive is what was said. Couldent describe mine more accurately. usually after sitting overnight I start it, warm it for a few minutes and if I shift to reverse it just sorta slowly slides into gear and if you accelerate at first it dosent seem to want to go anywhere. But if I shift to forward first which is always a firm shift then reverse its fine??? Its a 93 OD auto Been rebuilt and upgraded??? oiling to OD??? The truck has 100k and the trans was done at 65k or so.Ive been told the pump is weak and im loosing line pressure whan it sits for any length of time. Geez, whats with me and pumps on this thing??? Thanks.

Apache, there's nothing wrong. It's just the the torque-flite doen't pump oil when it's in park. And after sitting all nite the fluid in the converter bleeds back into the body.
Just put it in neutral while your putting on your seat belt and then go. Should take about 10-15 seconds to fill and lube everything.

Dave

Re:slow tranny

Thank you for the info, thats about what I figured. with the factory HD trans cooling set up there are about 5 miles of lines, I figured maybe it was related to a flow problem.

I had the same problem & had my trans rebuilt & now when I put it into reverse it immediatly has power. I would recommend you have it pressure tested at a reputable trans shop. Mine is an 89 3-speed. Also, if you have your trans pulled, look closely at the condition of the flex plate. They crack easily. Mine was in terrible shape & I replaced it while the trans was out.

Re:slow tranny

Gotta agree with Dave. Mine's been the same way since new. The dealer told me the same thing, the fluid will bleed out overnight.

Re:slow tranny

I agree with Dave also. I have had more than one car do this and putting it in neutral for a few seconds to let the converter fill does the job.

Re:slow tranny

One of the reasons that the oil bleeds out of the system is excessive clearance (end play) in the front half of the trans mission. I do not recall the exact amount allowed but I would bet it is on the high or over the limit. I will look it up later and post the value. Unfortunatly the only way to tighten it up is to remove the trans, measure the end play, remove pump assembly and reshim.( there is a selective shim betwene the front drum support and front drum)

Re:slow tranny

I assume you checked your fluid level. My gasser used to do this regularly because the transmission leaked. Remember to check fluid level in neutral, not park.

Re:slow tranny

Since it's cheaper than a tranny job, why not try using some "seal freshener" additive. It's primary job is to freshen up the seals and help with "swelling" them a bit to make a better seal.
Also, the idle in "N" is the best way to work around the drain back problem for the time being....

Bob.
