timing is going crazy.... help please!!!

i checked the timing today and it was at 30 degrees.... found tdc by removing the #1 injector and using a screw driver top show where the piston is.

marked it and then zeroed the dial indicator and found the timing to be 7.8 mm of lift= 30 degrees.

i then set the lift to 5.0 and removed the timing gear from the pump. i then returned the truck to tdc....

when trying to start it did not. we used either to get her rolling and found it to not like to run and after the 4 foot flame that decided to ignite out the stack i rechecked the timing. it was at 1.9mm...

i reset again to 5.0 mm and when i femoved the gear i found that the cam in the pump sprung to 1.9mm again..... why is the pump springing to different setting when the ghear is removed, anyone know how to get it to stop doing this?\\

truck is downed in the driveway for the night... i need her back asap....
