Stuck in Ft. Worth after evacuating! 1996 no charge *fixed thanks!*

Hey guys, I've been searching for hours on the net and here and haven't found a schematic for the charging system on my truck--1996 2500 CTD auto 2wd

I got it to a friends yesterday and let him check it. He tried full fielding the alternator(incorrectly put both terminals to 12v) and it didn't work, so I took the alt off and brought it to Napa. I had Napa test it and he said it acted real wierd spiking up and down and told me it was bad. Believing everyone, I bought the only alt. in stock and put it on the truck. It lasted for a while and now back to no charge again.

I believe now after reading on this site, that my original alt. was good and we incorrectly diagnosed it when trying to full field it. We should have grounded one terminal while putting 12v to the other. The Napa guy was probably a dumb a** and didn't know how to test it either.

What I need is the PCM pinout and wire color along with the alt. pinout and wire color. From there I can tell if it is my wiring or my PCM.

Also does it matter which terminal on the alt. is ground and which is 12v?

Please help! I had to evacuate from Louisiana for hurricane Gustav and now I can't get back without my truck!

Well I checked it out and all the wiring and PCM is good. Tried full fielding the alt again and got nothing. I took out the 1 day old alt and brought it back to NAPA.

They tested it for me again and it was bad. They got another one out the back and tested it and it failed also, so they sent somebody to another store and got another brand new one. We tested that one and same thing. We finally figured their tester was not working correctly, but their new alt. did sound like it was putting a load on the machine while my 1 day old one did not. They upgraded me to a lifetime warranty alt. for free and it took it.

I put the brand new alt. on and full fielded it while on the truck and it worked! I then hooked it all up and everything works great! Lets hope I don't need to use the warranty again!

Now I'm back on the road. Thanks a bunch for all the help!

Even faster alt test. With it running, hold a screwdriver or other metal object to the back of alt. If it's putting out, it has to produce a field and will draw the screwdriver to it like a magnet. Don't get it in the moving belt or across any terminals.
