stock fuel heater troubles ?

Ok anyone out there tell me when it's supose to be on at what temos and how, also how much resistance it's supose to have. any ways of testing it. reason being I had a heck of a time with fuel pressure today. 2 filters cloged in a matter of 15 miles I was not a happy camper. the truck is/was filled with #1 diesel and -30 winter blend.diesel 911 white. the fuel pressure before the filter was 16psi the fuel press after the filter was 1-0 and the truck would miss and sputter, hince NO fuel. I noticed a prblem the truck had lost pressure post filter I poped the hood and looked at the underhood gauges and confirmed pre filter 16 post 1psi so I changed it out that it only a month and 500 miles old , 5 degrees out. nexted drove 20 miles fuel pressure down to 1psi I said maybe it's gelling , so I pulled in and filled the tank with 20 gallons of -30 winter blend all they had, the other part of the tank was #1. I handn't a clue what to do, I just drove it home sputtering no power And said I don't care. anything over 1300 rpm and it would die. so I got home/ back to town and still 1-0 psi I added half a bottle of (red diesel 911) let sit 15 mins and low and behold the Pressure is back up to 12-14 psi. out side temp is in the zero degree F. well thats why My idea that the fuel heater is not working. -30 winter mix diesel shouldn't have any problems at 0F well. thats it shoot guys.

My bet is the fuel didn't gel but that you had water in your fuel that froze and plugged the filter.

your heater is a 2-part system...

1. a thermostat on the top than looks like a watch battery sensing the temprature in the housing.

2. a heater element inside the housing heating the fuel.

If your fuel heater is not working, it could be...

a relay

the t-stat

the element

bad wiring

well I will have to give the fuel heater a look. make sure power is gettign there. also the water in fuel light didn't turn on and the fuel is clear, well maybe agin when it warms up a bit it's currently 5 degrees with a wind chill down to -25 i don't need to be standing out there messing with it since it's running now. but all very good ideas. maybe I will feed the heater 12 volts direct and see if it help? anyone else out there has any more ideas give a shout out .

Timmy, if I'm not mistaken the 24 valve heater is much different than the 12 and is part of the main fuel filter.

How are you certain the heater is not working? the therm on the top of mine fried itself like 2 years ago, no problems as of yet.

well I haven't a clue if it's working or not I just know that the filter has been iceing/ waxing up, yes I know that's partly a fuel issue but there it not enough water to turn on water in fuel light and it only acts this way when it's below 10 degrees. I am thinking of just mounting an rv tank wrap or and oil pan heater on the filter housing it's self and when I start having problems turn it on.

The oil pan heater is not a bad idea. My son has one that he uses on his home snow blower. I used it when we did the IP recently. It's not very big and get's really hot on the business end. Even if it is not in total contact it willheat the aluminum housing. Just be carefull of the wires. Your generator could run it nicely. They are about 2 inches thick and the size of a 2x4..
So far I haven't seen the FP go down much. When it is below -10 I see about 5 psi drop. It takes a good 1/2 hour to get back up to 12 or so.
I don't know how to test for the FP heater. Probably unhook it and measure volts, then measure resistance through it. Gonna be tough to get at.
Good luck man, its going to get cold the next couple days.
