steering gear box seal leaking

I had the seal on the pitman arm shaft to start leaking bad. The truck 2000 2500 4X2.

Does anyone know the part number for the seal? Also does anyone have a link to directions on replacing the seal? A list of need tools would also be handy.

I checked with the parts houses here, none of them know what part to order. They all list 2 seal kits and no one know witch one to order.

I really don't have the money to turn loose right now to replace the whole gear box.

Any help appreciated

I just had to change mine it a 4x4 tho. A local car quest had the seal kit i needed for i think 18 bucks. I dont know the number off hand tho. It is kinda a pain to get the pitman arm off but if you get a pitman arm puller for $20. Put it on as tight as it will go till it looks like its guna break and get an air chisle and there should be just enought room to chisle on the back of the pitman arm should pop right off. Then there is a seal you have to get out befor you can get to the clip that holds the main seal in. If you do leave it in the truck once you get the clip off start the truck ture the wheel all the way to the left the seal SHOULD slide out. I took my whole box off it was easer but you could do it in the truck. I would rec taking out the whole box becaues when i took out that shaft it needed cleaned up realy bad. Its about a 2 hr job. Hope this helps Marc

Word of advice:

If your sector shaft seal is leaking chances are there is wear on the shaft thus causing it too leak. Nine times out of ten you can change the seal it will start leaking again its so much better too just replace the whole box as a unit even though they aint cheap its far better off then having too do the job twice.

hey bigrod ... i just went through this whole problem ... went to the *********** here in toronto and there wasn't a seal kit to be found anywhere in the country, plus US outfits were'nt showing any either ... after a week of putting Lucas stop leak in and watching it leave a trail in and out of my driveway they told me a kit might be available end of august/september maybe ... so i took the advice of a fellow cummins nut and bought the whole box from NAPA ... it was only 60 bucks or so more than the seal kit ... put that on and also a DSS ... i'll never be bothered again ! ... the steering feels great and no more leaks ... good luck ... pickngrin

Napa doesent carry seal kits for them and they like people who buy the whole box they make more money that way.

This is the address for the seal so you can look for your self.

Thanks for all the replies. I found someone that night after I posted the problem who found the kit for me. The reason no one can find a kit is it is listed as a lower pitman shaft kit.

The part number 1stGen72 listed is the right kit. O'Reilly is 12.99 on the kit Powercraft 8717.

When I pulled it apart to put the kit in, I found that the person who had the truck before me patched a seal into it. It missed up some other things that is not going to let the seal do it's job. I ended up having to order a gear box. I went though O'Reillys I get a small discount there also found out what he done Saturday afternoon NAPA was closed. It is also the same brand that Napa sales. It will be here Monday afternoon.

Thanks again for all the help.

had the same issue here in toronto.

dealer had the truck for 3 weeks waiting for a new steering box. they where orginally going to replace just the seal but the shaft had way too much play and demanded that they changed the whole thing. steering felt amazing after.
