Steering Gear

Hello,

I got a leaking seal on my steering gear pitman arm shaft. Does anybody have an idea where I can get the seal or have a part number, I checked with several parts stores; no luck.

Also, can it be replaced by just pulling the pitman arm off?

My truck is a 01 Ram P/U 2500 Diesel, 4wd, Quad Cab.

Thanks for the help.

The seal is a cheap one. I usually get them at NAPA stores. They are a pain to replace, as you usually have to lay underneath the truck to look into the box, with fluid still dripping out of it.

An easy to get the seals out is to remove the pitman arm and pull the retainer clip out of the box (should be c-clip) fill up the res. with fluid. start the truck and crank the wheel. the seals will probably blow out of the box, but it's going to make one heck of a mess. if they won't come out that way, you'll need to find a good pick set.

I remove the seal by screwing a self tapping screw into the metal part of the seal then pry the screw out along with the seal with a claw hammer. Make sure the shaft where the seal rides doesn't have a groove worn into it or you'll be replacing the seal again soon. Fingernail works good for finding a groove.
Conn's method sounds easier but a mess.

I generally pick a small hole in the seal and put a small screw in and pull it that way. Make sure you don't go into the rubber lip and damage the pitman shaft.
