smoking, hard to start? (Novice)

I've been having a lot of symptoms, but I'm a student right now and can't afford to be taken advantage of at a dealer. I don't have the power I think I should, and a friend with the same truck agrees, I only get around 15 to 20mpg no load, it smokes white when I accelerate hard, max speed is 65 to 70 (4.10's but still!) and it only reaches 2200 rpm. I'm a novice when it comes to diesels. I've replaced the fuel filter, checked the fuel strainer, air filter, and still stumped. It is a '95 2500 12v with 127000 on it. [undecided] ??? Any help would be great! Also, is anyone around Farmville, Va.? Thanks--

Could be alot of things ... change your fuel filter .. your timing is most likely off ... check for full travel on your throttle lever at the fuel pump. What does the throttle cable look like where it attaches to the pump? Where is Hamden? I'm in NN and can look at it for you 20 mpg no load is not bad for 4.10 gears.

Sorry, I meant that I get around 15mpg, and I expected 20mpg. I went to a dealer today, and I checked the vin # for recalls, and the throttle cable hasn't been replaced. That'll help I think. I'm taking it in fri. How often should I replace the fuel filter, and after how many miles should I get the oil changed? The dealer is unable to do the timing for the cummins, and I'm not sure where to take it. Any ideas? Hampden-Sydney is next to Farmville, an hour south of Charlettsville. I'm afraid to ask, but what if it is burning oil? anything common?-Thanks again

Welcome to the site cwbronc,
If I where you,,,, I would take a drive down to Newport News to see Keith (Rammin On).
Keith,,,
Would leaking intercooler hoses cause the white-ish smoke?

Might also check any rubber lines for any tiny holes allowing it to suck air. There is one on the return line from the injector pump it will dry rot and start letting air in. Its between the pump and the engine.

Mine did sorta something like that. When it was cold it looked like an old Cummins NTC 400 that was cold. Terrible white smoke. Is it eye burning? Does it stink really bad? Mine was a timing problem. I retimed it and it doesn't smoke exept when cold, EGT's are lower, more performance, better mileage, and it runs better.

Re:smoking, hard to start? (Novice)

Thanks for the replies. I went and got the throtle cable replaced, and got the valves adjusted. It helped a ton on low end power. The dealership in farmville can't do the timing. I figure it will be pretty expensive to get done. Any estimates? How could I make sure it isn't the lift pump, or leaking lines? Thanks again--cwbronc

HELP!!!top end power, speed?(Novice)

Update on the situation. I took my truck in again today and asked for a diagnostic to be done, I also asked if they could check the fuel presure, and the lift pump. They said nothing was wrong. I am still not able to get it up to red-line in gear, and my top speed is 70 now. The dealer said that with 4.10's that is as fast as I can go, and to not expect to get to red-line. When I get around 65-70, it kind of surges. According to them that is the limiter. Is this right? I'm on east cost time, and I have to pick it up later today HELP!!!! ??? [undecided]
