slams reverse/snap on accell

slams reverse/snap on accell

01 24valve 4x4 auto

i get a hard slam from the rear end when i put it in reverse and a snap soundfrom it when i accel from a dead stop. ive put the truck up on a rack and i have aruond 1/2 inch of play wich isnt bad but when i look at it on the ground going from drive to reverse its really excessive. any ideas?

Did you check your U-Joints? Thats sorta what it sounds like.

I agree! I had the same problem a few weeks ago and it ended up being the rear u-joints.

the truck has 124000 miles its about a 1/2 inch play in the rear diff. thanks to all that replied.

Wiggle your driveshaft back and forth - might be a pinion bearing.

mine is doing the exact same thing and it's getting worse im thinking its the trans do 1st gear and reverse sare the same clutch packs?

My Ujoints got so bad that the tranny started vibrating. Beat (tapped) the drive shaft with a deadblow and found the ujoint, but with my hands I couldn't tell.

If you mean the whole pinion shaft is moving a 1/2 inch then you have problems with your pinion bearings. Either way a 1/2 inch of movement in the driveshaft is bad news.

I think you should consider the low reverse band in the tranny if the U-joints are OK
