RPM surging at HWY speed
RPM surging at HWY speed
Hi everyone. Was on the interstate the past few days and started having a little transmission trouble. It’s on a 94 automatic. Anytime I start up the slightest grade my RPM’s increase by about 200 for about two seconds then return to normal then increase again (cycling back and forth). This isn’t like when you’re going up a long steep grade and it drops out of OD. It is just cycling. Sometimes it will do it when you initially give that little bit of increase in the throttle when you approach a hill (to maintain your speed) then will do fine until you reach the top and let off and the RPM will increase when you let off. In case you’re thinking “it’s supposed to increase going up hill,” these are very gradual south Alabama hills not mountain passes. I initially thought I would change the setting on my TPS but did not really see how to adjust it. This one is different from my 93. I did check the static voltage on the TPS and it was reading .52 vdc. Thanks for your advice.
Oh, checked fluid level and it’s okay.

I recently experienced the same symptoms on my '99. I started by checking all battery connections and ground straps then reset the TPS but ended up installing the DTT transmission and noise filter. You should start with the battery cables and might try the TPS reset and noise filter. Call Bill Kondalay at DTT and he'll help you. http://www.dieseltrans.com/dodge/index.htm
My '03 does a similar thing although its a manual tranny.
It seems to happen most with the cruise on but has happened otherwise. It acts like boost pressure is being varied. I havent installed a boost gage or put the scan tool on to monitor boost so I can't swear thats whats going on. Seems like I ran across a TSB for a similar concern but don't believe it applied to the 3rd gen engines.
Got to do a little more research

Sorry it has taken so long to get back on this one. I made the adjustment on the TPS just by removing the steel sleeves from the mounting holes. Was able to get an additional .25 vdc out. Drove the truck to Atlanta on Monday (all interstate about 200 miles) without any problems. Came back on Wednesday and it surged 3 times on me (which is still a big improvement). I guess a will get out there and see if I can file the holes out just a little and get a little more voltage out. Thanks again for the help.
I would suggest you go to the 12v engine and drivetrain forum and scroll down to the TPS thread and read, do not start throwing money at it until the advice in the thread is exhausted, most tps's do not need to be changed out. Goodluck, Rick
Mine did the same thing. I took it off and just flooded it in contact cleaner, while at the same time moving the part that connects to the throttle back and forth with a pair of needle nose pliers. After that i put dyelectric greese on the electrical connectors and wa-la
just like a brand new tranny. Saved me big $$$.
