Sqeaking in Dash at HWY speed

Drove 500 miles on the highway recently and under certain road conditions that were not completely smooth there was a sqeaking in the middle of dash from up high on top or behind the vents/radio. Sounds like plastic on plastic sqeak not a rattle. I pushed all over it to no avail. Could it be that plastic panel that goes between the main dash and windshield?

It was not loud, but it drove me nuts like there was a little bird in there when there was slight vibration from the road. About ready to try and pop off that top panel or take off the radio/vent bezel and drive around to see any difference.

Any ideas in this area as to what and where to look? Truck only has 7K miles and 3 years old in August.

I would pull that part of the dash out, it just pops out.

See if it still does it. If it does not, I would take some tape, probably duct or some thick masking tape, and put it on any plastic parts that are sticking down.

Look for any signs of rubbing on that dash part that you take out.

I had a similar problem, but it was the joint in the middle of my door cubby hole. Small piece of folded paper in between it, it cleared it up.

I have the exact same problem except mine doesn't do it all the time, and generally only in the summer heat or on a long trip. But same location and chirp sound like a bird, annoying.

Thanks guys. Yes, mine does not do it all the time as well and temperature seems to affect it as well. Another reason why I think it is plastic touching plastic or something.

I thought my door speaker was shot and found the same thing between the door pocket and main panel. I put a thin piece of double stick tape in there and it went away. Speaker was just fine, and pulled the whole door panel off to confirm that.

That top panel just pops up and has flexible plastic (or metal clips) that flext to hold? I suppose I should pry it up along the side nearest the driver/passenger, not the windshield?

You are correct. I may have a picture of it off, but not at work. Just slide a long screwdriver under it on a corner, apply a little pressure, it should pop off. Careful, if you have speakers in the dash, don't punch through one.

If you want me to, when I get home, I can make a vid/take some pics for you on how to. I can have it by tomorrow mid morning.

You guys are awesome . I hate it when I screw something up I'm not familiar with. I've had the center console out and that panel where the cupholder light is to mount my brake controller there, but did not go into the vent/radio bezel or the top of the dash.

When I first got the truck, I had the A/C vent box worked on by Dodge since the rear vents to the Megacab suck (not literally; they don't blow well). They cut out a screen or something out of a vent box per some bulletin. This made the front vents weak and didn't really help the rear so I had them put a new box back in like stock. Anyway, the dash was taken apart at least 2 times and this was well over a year ago. They must have loosened up something or maybe snapping and unsnapping all that plastic has weakend something.

I know I had to have the driver side sill replaced because they just smashed over the plastic tabs/clips and never said anything during their work. Who knows what might be the issue in there. I should probably at least check to see if that top panel has all its snaps still based on this little bird I hear.

Here ya go, dude.

I've had mine on and off a few times, so it comes up pretty easy. It does not seat all the way down because of the wires I have running to my gauges.

When you are pulling it up, once you get that front corner up, try to look and see where the next clip is, and apply the pressure right at that point.

When you are putting it back down, make sure the clips are lined up where you are putting it down at, or you'll have a heck of a time... just a gentle bump!

Thanks for the video and tips to remove that piece! I hope I don't find anything broken off like other areas I've found.

It always seems like those clips are going to break...but they don't.

Good song, too!

Those are the same style clips that the plastic entry threshold uses that my dealer broke for me. Had to get a new one of those.

Nice that this one is easy, and thanks for showing me. Drove around with it off and I still hear something deeper, but I think I need to drive it around some more to be sure.

I think I will be needing to go into the center vent area next.

I'm in Ontario. I certainly appreciate the invite and will keep this in mind.

Not sure if i'm ready to subject anyone besides myself to something so "****".

I guess I'm lucky that I don't have bigger issues to content with .
