Replacing Lp On 02 24v Auto

A friend of mine asked me why his truck would have a dead pedal sometimes it is a 02 quad cab 24v with a auto tranny around 65000 miles on truck i checked codes and got a p0216 whick i know is the code for a vp44 craping out. He took it to the dealer because it is still under warranty. They said that they would have to put the in tank fuel pump in because they need to make sure the vp44 is getting enaugh pressure they wanted $550 just parts. so I called cummins to see about getting a lp like the original 150 bucks. i am going to put that on tonight i was just wondering if any of you think that the vp44 is already junk or what and if there are any links or special procedures for replacing the lp. the truck is all stock with no guages. so i dont know what the original lp is putting out. Also has anyone had a dealer tell them this? Ant help would be appreciated thanks

Has the transfer (lift) pump been checked? The only reason for the dealer to replace the transfer pump is if it doesn't pass their current diagnostic test: TSB 14-002-03

If the dealer is saying "replace the transfer pump" without checking it, it sounds to me as though he is trying to get your friend to go away or give the dealership some unecessary money.

The dealer put an intank LP on dad's (02) truck under warrenty, along with the VP44 at no charge at all to him. I would say that his IP is on it's last leg.

They should do diag test on the transfer pump before they decide that its dead to test it to make sure that it is suppling sufficient fuel pressure to the injector pump. The P0216 is injector pumping timing failure, the death sentence. The intank transfer pimp is a better design because its cooled by the fuel and there is less vibration. It is not nornal to replace the transfer pump just to make sure that the injector pump is getting enough fuel. There is a test to comfirm this. Sounds like they just wanted to make an extra buck.
