Rear End Grinding Noise
In the last few weeks I've noticed a grinding noise when I pull away from a stop and turn left or right however there is no grinding noise when I pull straight ahead. Definitely coming from the rear end. Any help before I head to the dealer.
Thanks

Unless you have a lot of good experience do not go to the dealer , odds are your going to pay too much & have bad experience , just the way things seem to be .
I have been in the repair bis. for around 30 yrs. so what I would do is look at myself , it sounds like you may not have too much experience , but putting the rear axial up on jack stands and running truck in gear , then getting underneath and looking/listening for where the noise is coming from would be a start .
Bearings were mentioned , so also brakes are another common grinding .

I've found someone other than the dealer who know what he's doing and let me say your right about me being technically inept, however I take advice very well and will have u joints checked and have the fluid checked. I'll post a note when I get the truck back and let you know what the problem was and what the cost was.
Do you know what it would cost to replace the u joints (approximately)
Thanks

There would be a large difference in both part & labor , from one place to next , maybe as much as double .
U-joint $16-$65
Then labor $30-$100
Then after the shaft is out , do you do both or just one , if you have 2 piece drive shaft then 3 .

I just was having the same problem with the grinding noise. Heard/felt only when turning and taking off at same time. I decided to change the fluid and add 8oz of friction modifier before paying anyone else to trouble shoot it and glad I did. Problem is gone. I used mobile 1 synthetic.

Had the same thing happen to a Dodge Dakota with a limited slip diff. Hadn't changed the rear end oil for a long time, son's were driving it. It got real noisy when you turned. Took it to a shop and they changed the oil and the noise went away. The rear end was okay, just worn out oil.
IF you get a noise from the back while turning either its the limited slip or the spider gears.
you can change the oil yourself easily enough, which will let you inspect the oil and the magnet for any metal shavings or broken teeth.
Chances are its just the limited slip.
