Rear Disc Brake E-Brake Adjustment

I went to apply my E-brake yesterday and noticed that it is not holding like it used to. Any comments on how to adjust them. I have never even looked at the set-up and the rear brakes work just fine.

Thanks in advance!!

In the past when this has happened to me it was because the pads were getting worn. It may be time for new brake pads.

These dont use the disc pads for the e brake, it has a small drum inside the rotor than uses brake shoes. Mine did the same thing and found the rear axle seal was leaking ever so slightly and got the shoes wet, It never showed at that point that i had a leak from looking at the outside of the wheel or brakes them selves, until i took it apart. Might take at look at the e brake shoes to determine.

jfpointer gave me this advice from the FSM:

There is, of course, a special tool for the measurements, but it just looks like a slide caliper capable of inside and outside measurements to me.
Also, Mopar1973man has a pic of the inside of the rear wheel assembly, showing where the starwheel adjuster is:

He also had a procedure for adjusting the E-brake:

The best way to set your E-brake pads are too...

Jack up the rear of the truck so the tires are off the ground. Then spin the starwheel till the pads start to grab. Then back off the starwheel till they stop rubbing. Then do the other side the same.

Gary, the e-brake should not need adjusting (their just used for holding);unless something has gone wrong. As mentioned leaking oil seal, or e-brake pads dragging(not releasing completely) or someone drove the truck with the e-brake on . When applying the e-brake does the peddle go down the same or alot further than before. Either way I would take the rear wheels off check to make sure everthing is ok first before adjusting anything. just my 2 cents.

Funny.....I find alot of them that need adjusting. DC has never had much luck with "self adjusters" of any kind.

With shoes there is a way to adjust them. They have a hole on the inside bottom with a rubber seal. Remove the seal and there is a star gear(?) that you can use a screwdriver to turn until the break just starts to slow the tire from rotating.

Thanks. I thought that was probably the way, but I know some have some type of cable adjust.

Charlie,
The FSM says adjustment of the parking brake cable tensioner is only to be done when the tensioner or a cable has been replaced or disconnected for service.
In other words, just adjust the starwheel

A big thanks again for all of the replies. I was out of town for a long weekend of bobcat and varmint hunting and have just gotten back in tonite. I will pull the back wheels this week and give it a try at adjusting..... BTW, we scored 2 stuffable bobcats and my 15 yr old son bagged a 35 pound raccoon. It was the biggest coon I have ever seen in my 46 years.... Was proud of the boy for using his great grandpa's 1907 Fieldmaster single shot 22 at 60 yards, open sighted at 11:45 nite time shot too.... The joys of being a parent of a crack shot!!!! LOLOL

j body need your knowledge; what yr did the these truck come out 4 wheel disc brakes? I was under the impression that he had disc brakes. rear brakes being disc means rear internal drum e-brake shoes right? If they were holding before (adjusted properly) then how would they become unadjusted when they should only hold the truck not provide braking assistance. I've learn lots from this web site and need to learn more.

Mid model year 2001 was when the 4 wheel disc brakes showed up (hence some folks saying they have a 2001.5). Prior to that, fronts were disc, rear were drum.
