Put lipstick on it and call it a 99’

I am still searching for the “top assembly” for the water separator fuel filter assembly on my 99’ Dodge 3500 24V. It has the pre-heater mounted to it; the pre-heater leaks where it is pressed into the top assembly. I have a little info for those of you who will experience this problem as your truck gets older. Dodge doesn’t carry this part any longer and it has been superseded by a relocation kit which will cost you (brace yourself), $1200.

My research also has found that this also affects the 98’ assembly which is the same except it is not drilled for the pre-heater. If you have upgraded your 98- 99’ with a FASS or other filter system and still have your old filter assembly laying around the garage I would be very interested in it. All I need is the top part which is bolted to the manifold (with the heater or the 98 one without heater). I have included a web page which shows my installation. If you have one contact me via email tonycamacho@yahoo.com or private message. I really need to get this issue done before I start my trip back to Mexico.

I hear ya man, those filter housings are expensive!!! All I wanted was the filter head as well, just like what you are looking for but oh no, they have to sell me the entire unit. Mine wasn't leaking around the pre-heater but rather where my FP Gauge is tapped into the port. So for the last mmm almost a year I have been running with a self made clamp to hold the port onto my FP gauge fitting, lol. Here is a picture before the leak/crack started and of the part you need (for others referance)

I don't have an extra one lying around though, good luck!!

Being in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, you really don't need a fuel heater. There's plenty of folks who live in way colder places and have bypassed the leaking heater unit with no ill results.

You really can easily save yourself some frustration and cash by installing an aftermarket filter only unit, or maybe a filter unit from a newer model.

1-2-3:

I agree with you and I will plug that heater port as a last result. It is frustrating when a manufacture expects you to refinance your truck just to purchase a part that should still be in the system. Obviously this part had a high failure rate for them to supersede it with a relocation kit. My frustration is that they should price the kit reasonably or give you some sort of credit when you are forced to change this out. Thanks to ROB24vctd who also reads the post on this site I will receive a filter unit from a 2000 which I suspect is the so called relocation kit offered by Dodge.

I agree with you as well. Unfortunatly there's not too much us little guys can do about it, other than get smarter than they think we are and do what fix it without sending them the retirement fund.

Funny, the filter can looks exactly like mine only with the heater in it.

Fuel Heater Leak

The leak is a failed O-ring. It isn't hard to replace. There's a write-up in 24-valve Engine and Drivetrain. Maybe several. Here's one of the threads:

The hardest part of the job is getting the wires out of the connector where it joins the harness. Required because the new O-ring probably won't stretch enough to get over the connector.

Thanks for all the info. That is what makes America and Americans great, our ability to communicate, put our heads together and solve those problems related to our trucks and guns.
