PODS are out, Factory injectors back in
PODS are out, Factory injectors back in
This one is for ANY and ALL suggestions: I installed a set PODS, the power was great, SMOKE from you know where, 28-30 psi boost at times, EGT's knocking 1350-1400* at WOT, but the fuel mileage dropped to 14 mpg on the hiway. I took out the pods and installed the factory injectors on last Friday morning before going to the gulf, they had 10 times the carbon and soot build up of the factory ones, after only 1 week, and the factory injectors will still provide 22-23 psi boost, and the MPG went back to 19 mpg at 75-80 mph. Even with the pods, I backed out the fuel screw 1 1/2 turns and backed off the smoke screw 2 turns.
SO, "since the shop fork truck is running really bad" what would be the best way to fix it, and still get the repairs buy the BEAN COUNTER. ;D ;D ;D

First, you gotta keep your foot out of it in order to get good mileage.
It sounds to me like you are not getting enough air in there. This causes the black smoke and poor mileage. How bad does it smoke when going 75 mph? If it isn't clear or close to it, you aren't getting enough air. It might be time for a turbo upgrade.
This is just my less-experienced-than-some idea. I could be wrong. :

To affect your highway mileage, you would have to turn up the star wheel to dang near the top (6 turns or more) to get the spring pressure up to hold off the fuel at minor boost levels. This might hold off the soot till you build a good amount of boost.
You would also back out the smoke screw(aneroid) at the top till it is just touching the pin. In other words, no fuel at all during low/no boost levels. This is what I was told would also help on the idle haze problem.
I hope this will help a bit.

Stamey, the mpg was all hi-way miles, as far as the smoke, it wasn't bad at all just cruising done the road, form what I could see looking in the mirror.
LilDog, if I had the gonads, or most important, the time to start really playing with the pump I would. On the way home I was thinking if maybe a good 16cm turbo would help. I was also thinking about the Bosch 185 injectors, but at $800.00, I can't slide it by her, if I tried, she wouldn't even let me sleep on the couch
, and it's getting too cold to sleep in the shed

Re:PODS are out, Factory injectors back in
I have the POD's in my 92 4x4 with a 16 non wastegated housing, I do live at about 1200 foot elevation. My pump settings are stock never changed them. Anyway, with the POD's my truck doesn't smoke bad at all at idle, highway speed, or really hard sustained acceleration, when I get on it it does let out alittle puff but nothing bad. Call Piers personally I think it's your pump settings why it smokes so bad and the mileage is bad. Also, my mileage didn't change.
Re:PODS are out, Factory injectors back in
My brothers truck has POD's and his highway mpg did not change. I belive overall when he puts his foot into it all the time he loses 1-2 mpg over stock.

Thanks Guys, I'll try and call Piers, but the "bean counter" told me on Saturday, since we have 4 different orders for parts and pumps coming in next month (the biggey is for 35 vacuum pumps) and bills to pay, if I spend ONE MORE DIME, other than for fuel, she's gonna make me go back to driving the little Furd Ranger :'( :'(, she said atleast it's quite & don't smoke. Pumpdaddy,
I agree with the other fella's here... you should certainly have better highway mileage than 14 per gal.
The POD injector flows enough fuel on their own that you do not need any pre-boost or low boost fuel.
In my truck I have the starwheel set right at the top of the post... in fact I've even modified that system a bit to increase, over and above the "stock" effect of the starwheel, to further increase the amount of boost needed to start triggering boost fueling..
I am only guessing but I'd say I get little or no "boost fuel" until well over 10 psi. In fact I would guess that at 15-17 psi is were the AFC starts to show some marked deflection.
This has made a difference in the trucks low end to some degree because it takes a second or so to develope boost when I want to "play"... but really not a major drawback in my opinion.
I also have the smoke screw cranked pretty much right out, so that it has zero effect on the AFC diaphragm. It isn't in the equation period. Besides, the only thing it does is provide an initial "shot" of fuel to help spool the turbo.
I have a modified fuel cone, the fuel screw about 3/4 turn from bottoming out, internal pump alterations, max timing, gov screw backed out, governor spring installed.... with this setup, I can get rougly 16-17 mpg around town and highway combined if I drive like I'm in no hurry...
If I want to play hard, then I pay hard ... in terms of mileage...
Besides, with the temps I can hit, even with my hard working hybrid HX35/16 (thanks Piers!!) I don't do too much racing.... well, ok, a bit..
But still, 1500*F is a bit toasty to do too often..

Re:PODS are out, Factory injectors back in
I would check those copper washers since the length extending into the combustion chamber is critical. I think mine was a 0.020 inch thick washer but several choices came with the injectors. Also, make sure there is only one washer per injector and all the old washers were removed completely. Two washers could cause bad mileage like you are describing. I changed my housing to 16 cm which probably inreased air at same time so I noticed no difference in mileage. I did notice a slightly darker haze at idle probably since boost is near zero at idle and my timing needs to be advanced.
Re:PODS are out, Factory injectors back in
Thanks Bushy & Sootblower for the help. Bushy, as far as "adjusting" the AFC, could you send me an e-mail about how to do it and NOT screw it up. As far as I know, the injector pump is stock, still even got the black paint on everything. Sootblower, I made double sure that all the copper washers where out. The new ones that came with the pods looked like about .060 thick, but so did the ones that came out. I will mike one at the shop in the morning and get back to ya'll. My main problem with the pods was the smoke at idle and petter putting in town. My wife told me she watched me leave the house and go down the road one morning and the smoke had a blue color to it, it stopped after I put the factory injectors back in????, and the truck had been idling for about 10 minutes to warm up. I am looking at buying a small 5th wheel after the 1st of the year, one not too long, so I can still pull the boat we have and be legal on length. My wife wants to buy one that is over 38 ft long (boat) and sleeps 6, she says we can sleep on the boat, NOT IN A CAMPGROUND
. I just want the truck to be able to pull MY TRAILER(camper), it'll probally be to take her food and clean clothes at the gulf on weekends >
while I'm at the shop working.
