Had to hit the brakes suddenly today and the rear locked up. All of a sudden it breaks free with no pressure difference from my foot and the brake pedal kicked back up toward me and clunked. Any ideas why I would experience that?

 

Sounds like your anti-lock brakes taking over. Mine has done the same thing.
