overfilled oil on change

Changed my oil on Sat. and put 9.5 quarts in (without thinking to check the level). Even though I let it sit and drain everything it could, I managed to over fill it by the distance of the "safe" level (1/2" - 3/4"?). I drove around a bit waiting to see if it would settle down some (I think the capacity is around 10 qt.), but it has not settled at all. Before I start driving it around more, is this a problem I should be concerned with?

Don't know about the '99s but many 12 valvers including me use 12 qts in a change. I suspect the 24 valve can handle it as well.
It will be over the safe mark but is no problem.
Problem occurs when the level is so high that the crank hits standing oil in the pan and whips it into a froth that is easily discernible on the dipstick.

I just did mine yesterday, And I put 11 Qts in, let it sit for about 5 mins..started it and let it idle for another 5 mins...then shut down and let it sit for about 5 mins...came out to just under (maybe an 1/8th inch) the "safe" full line...

but I agree that overfull isnt gonna kill it unless it is so full that it has standing oil hitting the crank.....

If you see FOAM on the stick crack the plug and drain a bit. let it sit, and check again.

adjust untill you have it right.

Ok, here is a silly question. I see people putting in 3 gallons of oil and say "its just right" (11.34 liters or 12 quarts). I put in 10 liters and it shows over full by about an inch on the dipstick. So I drain till it says full. Am I running my truck low on oil? Please explain.

I don't know, but with my 03 and now 06, if you put 3 gallons in and start it, then let it sit a few minutes it will be about 2/3 of the way to the full mark.

Let it sit close to an hour, and it will read right at the top of the full mark.

I just looked in the FSM for a 2000, and oil/W filter is 10.4 liters. I use 11 liters. As 1 liter is 1 liter I would say that's accurate. Someone says 1 gallon or 1 quart to you, you might assume they are talking US gallon or quart if their address is in the US but you can't be sure. Then you cross the border here and you don't have a clue whether it's US or Imperial.

Any chance your dipstick is going farther into the tube, thus reading high?

I had the same thought.
Could be someone lost or broke the original dipstick and replaced it with one for a gasser or something else.
I'd try to find a similar truck and compare dipsticks.

10 quarts with a new filter is the proper amount for a 99, 5.9 24v.
Even if you accidentally over fill the engine, it is very easy to remove the excess oil.
To remove the oil, purchase a flexible whip for a grease gun, remove the 1/8'' plug on the top of the oil filter housing, thread the whip in the hole, place the other end of the whip in a gallon jug and start the engine for a few seconds, or until you have removed the amount you desire.
Shut down engine, remove whip, reinstall plug, wait at least 5 minutes and recheck oil level.

Well, it is possible that the dipstick is going in too far, it fits kinda loose, everything on that truck fits kinda loose. What I'll do is stick in 10.4 liters, run the truck really good, let it completely cool off overnight on a level area and etch the dipstick.

That don't sound right now does it!

On my 01 I put 2 1/2 US gallons and let it sit for an hour. I'm usually above the top of the safe mark. But after I run it and it sits overnight its a little below the top of the safe mark so I'll add another quart. Which gets it about right.

I think the filter holds more than a quart but that's about how it goes around here.

Proper way to check the oil??

I just changed the oil on mine again, and I have a question. If I pull the dipstick, wipe it off, stick it back down the tube again and immediately pull it out, the oil level shows at the bottom of the "Safe" zone. But if I let the dipstick stay in the tube for ~ 5 minutes, the oil level shows about a half inch above the "Safe" zone. (This is after the engine had been run for a few miles, then allowed to sit for a half hour.) Why is this? The oil shouldn't take that long to cover the dipstick!
