Re:oil filter

first time I changed mine I had a few choice words for DC :-X . I managed to collapse mine with one of those strap wrenchs before tearing the nylon in two. Ended up using an old screwdriver and driving it through the filter, then hitting it with a hammer to turn the durned thing (approx 45 mins to remove not counting going for new filter wrench). had to turn the filter almost 1 1/2 turn before she loosened up. At that point I woulda liked to have a DC person there as I needed a good place to store my old screwdriver untill next oil change . Anyway, no more probs like that after first oil change.

Duane.

Re:oil filter

That's great, it seems everyone has a story to go along with such a simple thing as an oil change...

I have a fond memory of cussing up a storm, busting my knuckles, attempting to unscrew it from up top, underneath, on a step ladder, on the bumper, dangling from a bungie cord, etc.... it was fun! Everyone should experience that... ;D

Tony

Re:oil filter

My truck's first oil change was done by the dealer, who didn't get the filter tight enough, which I found luckily. I have done the oil and filter changes since then. I install the oil filter by hand and remove it by hand........NO leaks & NO problem getting off next time. Removing the hose to the turbo gives ya enough room to get it in and out from the top side. ;D
Now if I could just find the Gremlin that goes under there and tightens the drain plug between oil changes, I'll be happy. : Looking into getting one of those quick drain deely-bobs.

Re:oil filter

I ordered one of those drain deely bobs for a friend of mine that changes oil about every three weeks and he loves it. Like the mental muffin that I am, I didn't bother to think to order one for myself, duh! When you order yours, let me know and we'll get two sent this way. That quarter turn spring loaded valve couldn't be any simpler and it is fool proof.
(just what I need)

Re:oil filter

DD, look at the EZ-Drain at Genos instead of the 1/4 turn ball valve. I had one years ago, and it took forever to drain because the opening is so small. The other problem is "streamers"; when it's almost drained and a breeze blows the thin stream all over. I really like my EZ-Change and the optional, but necessary hose. They break it up so you can buy 2 valves and use the same drain hose.

Tom Hybiske

Re:oil filter

Hey Rattlin Ram,
That ain't no Gremlin, it's called Thermal exspansion (spelling). We all change the oil when it's hot, to get it to drain, but give the pan a little bit to cool off before installing the plug. Heat makes things expand, cold contracts them, like peeing in 20* below weather. You should never install a drain plug with the pan hot. My father taught me that hot was if you can leave your hand on it, without it hurting, it ain't hot. WE use both heat and cold to install parts in our shop, 300*F will expand parts from .005-.010, and liquid nitrogen -380*F will shrink some parts as much as .030, depending on the materials. Try the nitrogen on a rubber hose, it'll break like glass

Re:oil filter

The 03`s need a cup filter wrench and you need to access it from the bottom with a 20 inch extension and ratchet. :'(

Re:oil filter

Speaking of liquid nitrogen. We would catch wharf rats, take them over to the optics shop, dip them in liquid nitrogen, and then throw them out into the parking lot. They would shatter into very, very small pieces, more so than safety glass. Rather spectacular. Then the very, very small pieces thawed.......
