Re:oil filter

Lotsa complaints about first time oil changes, and filter being real tight from factory. I cannot speak to '03 issues as yet, but I find it easiest to use &quot;oil filter pliers&quot; on all 2nd gens that I have been into. I have several types of filter wronches, and the pliers work best. Kinda like a large slip joint plier w/three settings and rounded jaws with small teeth at the ends. Shouldn't be too hard to find. Mine came from Mac dealer I think.

Re:oil filter

Even when I put on the filter hand-tight, it seems to tighten up during use. I use a filter wrench that I bought at an auto parts store for about 8 bucks. Be sure to check the size, you need an extra large. One that fits car filters won't do. I can't remember the dimension, or I'd give it to you.

Re:oil filter

I have four bloody knuckles, one brcken oil filter cap wrench, and one broken craftsman 3/8 drive rachet and did not get this **** thing off. Looks like I lose. I'm calling my dealer right now to make an appt.

Re:oil filter

Filters are tuff to change the first time on most new vehicles. When you tighten, hand tight, then not more than 1/4 turn. Make sure the old gasket did not stay on.

Re:oil filter

I use one of the spring type that you can get from Snap On, etc. This also saved my bacon on the fuel filter. Tried to get my son's fuel filter off with a strap wrench and ended up just crushing the filter a little bit. I got frustrated and told him to take the #$@* thing somewhere to have it replaced. Well, being a kid, he kept putting it off until the fuel filter split and started spraying diesel everywhere. He drove it on home (thank god diesel doesn't ignite easily) and I tried the spring type oil filter tool and it came right off. Thsi is a good tool for the CTD.

Re:oil filter

calvin! calvin! Take a deep breath, Dude. Ok..now go out and buy a 4 dollar strap wrench, the 1/2 square tube with a nylon strap. Then get yourself a couple of feet of black iron pipe to use as an extension breaker bar for a little extra umph! (motto: The bigger the doubt, the bigger the hammer.) Bring the strap up to the top of the can, take up the slack, and grunt. It's never been known not to work.

-Tom-

PS No... don't know why they continue to put them on so tight. : ???

Re:oil filter

Filter Pliers...no problemo.<br>Or when yer really mad...like I was the first time and did not have the pliers and bent and broke everything else...I put a screwdriver thru the side of the filter and then used it to turn the filter off. Not the most professional or clean way to do it but it worked.
