Oil Drain Plug Fell Apart - Advice if you please
Oil Drain Plug Fell Apart - Advice if you please
While performing an oil change late yesterday on the Cummins, I destroyed the drain plug by tightening, when I was intending to loosen. (1st time for this, and not exactly pleased with myself.) The plug separated from its collar and I need a replacement. Plus,I hope I did not damage the pan itself. Parts stores have Chinese made and I'd like to know if they are acceptable to this forum. I do long hauls and losing the engine oil is a concern should the Chinese replacement plug prove a poor choice. Thank you.
That happens from over tightening it. Dealers have them. Get one plug and a dozen washers. Change washer every few oil changes and you don't have to muscle it down to keep it from dripping. Or you can get one of several quick drain plugs.

This trick works, I've done it many times.
Duct tape the hose of a home or shop vac to the oil fill and plug the end of the blowby tube with a bolt, screwdriver handle, etc.
Turn the vac on and you can remove the drain plug without any oil coming out.
None will get in the vac either.
If you have messed up the pan you might be better off installing one of the numerous oil drain valves available with RTV.
That way you can seal it up good and never have to remove it again.

Thank you Bill. Looking at a 2,400 mile run starting tomorrow 5AM. Have been putting off this job today due to rain. So I hope the drain threads are passable and I will look at the option of installing a drain valve upon return. Thanks for taking the time to share your advice.
That one is not really for engine oil
