odd auto tranny downshifting!! what is it?

Hey i got a 95 2500 with an auto...the tranny has never been worked...just commuting...when u lock out the overdrive and im driving around empty, sometimes it cant decide whether to downshif to 3rd or stay in 4rth....up down up down 2 or three times and it will relax....when im loaded however it seems to shift just fine and knows where it wants to stay...also this only happens every other day or so..so when i come to the lights i turn the O?D stwitch off and on again and it works fine...almost feels like the switch wiring has bad contact very odd...tell me what ya'll think

Try cleaning the TPS sensor (I think that's the right one).

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=42649 Check this thread out it is very informative and will most likley solve your problem and it also helps to take the TPS wires out of the factory harness from the pcm to the tps. Be sure and read the whole thread. Goodluck,,,,Rick

After rereading your question, I read it too fast the first time. I guess ha ha . You state that it hunts for 3rd or 4th when you have it locked out of od, that is what is leading us to think the tps what you are seeing or feeling is the torque convertor unlocking and locking , now if it is hunting for 4th which is overdrive and you have the overdrive {on} then that too could be tps and some shift linkage adjustments, and or the tps voltage adjustments and or some other things. Let us know and Goodluck,,,Rick

hey kandgo just to clear up what u said...the problem is occuring when i have the overdrive off...so only using my 4 gears in the city....anyways guys i truly appreciate the response....this has the potential to be a quick and inexpensive fix...but since im new to dodge and the cummins...where is the TPS sensor??...can i get it out no prob?...

ps...ive seen that pic of the connecting rods thats circulating on here...what a bone!!...the powerstroke is a chicken wing comapred to that...and well sadly enough the chevys....well the 6.5 was a disgraceful engine...lets not even go there

Your tranny is a four speed, with overdrive off you are using just three and the in and out you are feeling is th torque convertor unlocking and locking. I am away from my main computer so someone else might chime in and post a photo of the tps location, but as for direction where it is follow your throttle linkage towards the front of your engine and it is on the side of your injection pump which is on the driverside of the engine.
