2000 and up can do the key trick. some 99's can as well, however most can't. all 98's cannot do the key trick.
P-1689 = No Communication Between ECM & Injection Pump Module
Sounds like you may have a loose connection somewhere, or a dying injection pump. Normally the code for the dying/dead injection pump is P0216 but there are exceptions.

the wireing is fine, all clean and put back tight, it has a new ecm, i thought that was the problem, you say dying injection pump, what does that mean, i got the truck a year and half ago, act fine intill last fall, had a bad week not starting then ran fine all winter till april. gave me alittle problems then ran fine till a few days ago, know it runs fine, does any every experience this problem,
The VP44, the injection pump, is known for doing goofy things before it goes dead completely. Some engines will run fine one minute, cut off the next and never re-start. (I believe shovelhead or Lary Ellis had this happen to them). Other trucks get wierd symptom like yours, and throw odd codes. If I were you I would get a fuel pressure guage and keep an eye on it. Starving the VP44 of fuel is a sure way to kill it. Rarely does the ECM crap out. The PCM has nothing really to do with engine function. The PCM controls the tranny, cruise control, all the Dodge items, not the Cummins.

No fuel bowl, nothing like a carburetor. Check out this link, great info on how the VP44 works.

I reccomend you keep an eye on your system and watch out for any more codes.

My truck did the exact same thing on Satuday. Was running fine i came up to a stop sign and died and woulnt start had to walk all the way home got some tools went back and had to crack 3 injector lines fired up and has run fine ever since , BUT i have 0216 code i knew my injector pump is going i just couldnt see myself putting out 1800 for a HRVP until my truck is completey gone But other then that it has plety of power if it didnt show that code i would have no clue other then the fact that it just died on me. i guess this week will be the ordering week i dont know.....
