No power steering or brakes, pulled vacuum pump broken gear chunks

What are the broken chunks from that drive the vacuum pump , and why is it gonna cost me 2700 dollars to fix at a repair shop?

Oh BTW its my 99.

Tech said something about an updated part needs to be installed.

No oil leak, and pump is fine he said.

Did I just get KDP'd?

HELP!!!..............Jim

sure does sound like it, the updated part is probably the kdp tab. The broken chunks are either teeth off the gears or part of the case. If the pin gets caught in the gears it can break them but sometimes it gets throwed around in there until it breaks or cracks the case. If you only new what is involved in replacing the gear case you would understand why its so high,

Thanks for the reply plow.
When he said the pump was fine , I guess he meant the power steering pump, because it is the vacuum pump that spit out those chunks of gears.

Can they be replaced or do I have to buy a new vacuum pump? The tech says no.

I called a dealer and they said $2200.

I called Cummins West, and I'm waiting for a call back.

Well I can save $1000 by getting it from Cummins. I just have to wait a week.

Hey guys, I got home too late to read your replys.

I needed the truck back, so I paid the $2200 for the new pump.

I've never been one to buy rebuilt unit since they always seem to go out right when I need my truck the most.

But in this case I would definitley make an exception.

I could have replaced the coupler gear for $80. Or just sent fixinrams the vacuum pump and all I would have to buy was the reseal kit ($59.95)and have them install it ( I think $ 189) and they said they would replace the coupler gear for free. Or just buy one outright for $399 no core.

I think I'm gonna be sick..........

.....then you really don't want to hear that I threw a couple of old pumps out last month that only needed a re-seal kit.
