No acceleration

Hi folks:

Just another question about the 5.9 diesel. When I travel at approx. 80KM & try to accelerate, there is no response whatsoever until I let off the pedal & then try it again, maybe it will respond. Also, at times when I start it up, I can drive for a mile or two & there will be no accelerator at all & then it starts to respond. Is this a T.P.S.? If it is , where is the cheapest place to buy one. The prices here In Can. are enough to put a down payment on a vehicle. If it is not the t.p.s. what might it be.?

P.S. The lift pump has been replaced 50,000 ago, the fuel filter has been replaced & the lines have been replaced at the fuel tank where there was a leak.

Can someone help please?
Donliz

depending on what year it is, there was a tsb or a recall on the throttle linkage. i believe it was on the 12v engines but im going on memory here.
as far as the t.p.s. i used contact cleaner and flushed the t.p.s at the business end where it mates to the pump. if your truck acts up shifting into overdrive or out overdrive then i would suspect the tps.

Please let us know the year, make and model of your rig, donliz, as there are some significant changes from year to year that will lead to drastically different troubleshooting measures. Details, we need details!

i did some research after the last reply. try this site, http://dodgeram.info/tsb/index.html, it may help to see if your problem is the
result of a tsb or recall. good luck.

I'll take a shoot in the dark on this one, dead pedal on a 24v truck, could be the apps, but probably the VP44. If its a 00-02 turn the key on and off 3 times leaving it on the 3rd time and watch your odometer for codes p1693 and a p0216 won't be good. BUT I'm just guessing, not know what year truck you have

dead throttle problem

I am new to this group.....seems very informative. I am have the same problem with the pedal going dead at certain speeds....usually in and around 80kph. she is a 02 dually 4x4 24 valve. she is new to me....and went in for warrenty. first,,,they did the torque con and a govenor relay/valve....same problem. then they replaced the altenator. seemed fine for 2 days but the problem returned. I am trying the "apps" reset as I type this. codes are as follows.....0216, 0234, 0500, 1687, 1693, 1694, 1698. I am a licenced mech.....but this cummins is a bit new to me. I am sure the codes will erase after the "apps" reset and if they reurn I will repost. I do like this truck and really want to get her ironed out before I start with any mods. as for my stupid question.....what is a silencer ring I see mentioned here alot.

Thanking you all in advance

well the 0216 is a dieing Injector pump. 0234 is trubo over boost. 500 speed sensor sig, ( on the rear end). the rest of them are some I haven seen before. 1687 no message from mic module (machanical inst. cluster). and 1698 no mess. from tcm (trans. control module) clear the codes and see what comes back, and save your money for a new vp44 (around 1k) and set aside about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to put it on. You will need to put on a new lift pump also, and put a fuel pressure gaue in the cab. Do a search on in-cab gauge on the 24v to anser your ? on why

From your description I suspect you have a 24 valve truck built between 98.5 and 2002. That being the case, go up to the technical facts in the top menu, and follow the links to the APPS reset procedure.

Do the reset, and if the problem disappears you have found a temporary fix. Then clean or replace the APPS at your earliest opportunity.

If this is not the problem, then it is likely your injection pump or another bad transfer pump. On the 24 valve with the VP44 injection pump it is critical that the owner run a fuel pressure gauge to watch the pressure from the transfer pump. If the transfer pump fails and the truck is operated in hot weather with low pressure it guarantees injection pump failure in short order.

If it is your injection pump, do not just get any rebuilt pump. Get one with both a new internal processor and a new case with the brass/bronze housing for the timing valve/piston. Otherwise, you will repeat the failure all too soon.

If it is your transfer pump again, get a good one with the dual filters from either FASS or Air Dog, and be sure to install a fuel pressure gauge.

Thanks Greg for your reply. My rig is a 1998.5, 24v, 3/4 ton, automatic 2-wheel dr. This vehicle has just about exhausted my patience with the returning symptoms after a repair. I have just installed a new wastegate actuator on the turbo as it was not functioning; got it at Hoesli diesel off the internet for $147.00 US. ...very happy with that as it was $330.00 Can. here. I also replaced the APPS, which I purchased from them, for $368.00 U.S. which was $650.00 Can here. So with tax etc. I still saved $360.00 Can.
I still have the dead throttle from time to time. I have driven it for a few hundred Kms....I also calibrated the new sensor with the ecm before I started it up. The injector pump has been replaced just before I purchased the truck. I have replaced the lift pump, fuel filter recently & the fuel lines & connections at the tank have also been repaired.
If there is any help you can provide,I would really appreciate it. From reading articles on the D.T.Forum, a lot of people have had things done at the dealer with misguided diagnosis. That has cost them a bundle & things are still not fixed. I am trying to avoid that.

Thanks again,
Don Harnden
