loss of acceleration

Our company has a 2001 dodge diesel with 180 000 high-way miles. We have been complaining to the local dodge dealer for the last 90000 miles about 3 problems which no one including cummins dealers can help us with.
A/at highway speed with a trailer in tow it periodically makes a loud fan noise that resembles the sound of a jet engine, and it then disappears after 15-20 seconds.this does not occur with-out a load and we notice no change in the power or tach
B/with and with-out a load on the truck we have a engine that feels like it is revving up and down slightly. The local dodge dealer has noticed the problem but has no answers.
The tach does not move and there is no noticeable difference in the power
C/no accelerator--this can happen either first thing in the morning or after you have been driving for any number of hours.EXAMPLE:you have been drivingfor 5 hrs and stop for a coffee and when you go to leave the gas pedal goes to the floor and nothing happens.AFTER LETTING THE ENGINE IDLE FOR 15 SECONDS EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BECOME AS NORMAL AS CAN BE WITH THIS TRUCK.

Re:loss of acceleration

First off, welcome to the site.

The fan noise, jetlike, is probably the fan, they are quite noisy when the fan clutch engages.

The next problems can probably be fixed with an APPS reset.
(accelerator pedal position sensor)

1. Set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cables on both batteries
3. Turn ignition key to run(to drain any remaining capacitors)
4. Let truck sit for 30 minutes( this is the recommended minimum)
5. Return ignition to OFF position
6. Reconnect both batteries and secure, not a timed event
7. Turn key to run position(not start) and depress accelerator pedal slowly all the way to the floor
8. Allow pedal to return to top position slowly
9. Turn ignition switch OFF
10.Release parking brake

If it continues, you might have a bad APPS, almost sounds like you have a dead spot on it.
Hopefully the reset fixes it.

good luck

phox

Re:loss of acceleration

Phox is right with the fan and the APPS. The recalibration of the APPS is a temporary fix. If it is surging and has on occasion not worked (accelerator to floor with no results), the APPS is going bad.
