need transfer case

My transfer case is leaking all the fluid out from where the driveshaft exits it. The dealer says I need a rebuild. They are going to give me 15% discount but I am still looking at a $1500 bill. Just checking to see if there are any out there.
Oh, unfortunatly it was run dry for a few months down in Baja. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Re:need transfer case

Buy a NP205 off E-bay and stick it on. Cheap, Strong, and simple.

Cost just a little more than $250 to put new seals in, plus I needed shims for the front output shaft. He didn't charge much for that. Whe I went in asking to have it rebuilt, he was pretty confident it wouldn't before he even looked at it.

Re:need transfer case

As others have said, I'd go for the seal replacement. The first thing I'd do though, is fill up the transfer case and run it in 4wd to see if there is damage to the gearing/internals due to lack of lube. If it works OK, then do the seals. If not, look for a replacement case. You may be able to buy one cheaper.
You'll need to clearly identify your transfer case
MT, std duty 241 transfer case, 23 tooth
MT, std duty 241 transfer case, 29 tooth
AT, std duty transfer
MT, HD 241 transfer case (has PTO gear), 23 tooth
MT, HD 241 transfer case (has PTO gear), 29 tooth
AT, HD transfer (has PTO gear)

But look here: http://www.car-part.com
I have seem them for less than 1,000.00 there. Re:need transfer case

Of course I cannot speak for the condition of the rest of the transfer case but the leak at the rear is easy to fix. It has a sleeve bushing just like an automatic transmission does. Pickup the seal and the sleeve and take the extension housing off the case (in the truck) If you cannot change the bushing take the tail housing to a transmission shop and they can change it in a few minutes. In actual practice you must drive out the old one and drive in the new one, usually a large socket will make it as a driver. Use a larger socket and with it reversed, drive it in until it bottoms out. Pop in a new seal and it is like new. That part of it is an inexpensive repair, probably $25 bucks or so.
