Need help with 05 cummins please
Hi everyone.
This is my first post on this site, and I would like to ask for some help in regards to a problem my father is having with his 05 dodge cummins quad cab.
My dad was headed south on I-15 near Scipio, Utah. When he began to climb a hill just after the town he experienced a loss of power on accelaration. He stopped by a local shop and had the fuel filter changed. After the filter was changed the truck will start, but will kill if accelerator is pushed with anymore than the slightest amount of force. I have the truck right now, as he was headed on vacation and I loaned him my Z71 silverado to finish his trip. I would like to take the truck to the dealer (Doug Smith) on monday morning.
The truck is a 05 with 43,000 miles. it is completely stock and has never had any problems. My questions are these: Is this somthing a dealer would try to blame on poor fuel quality or some other non-warrantable cause? I fueled my truck at the same location as he did when I went to trailer his truck back, and I have not had any problems. And would anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the problem?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I do not have internet access at my home so I use the access at work, so please excuse me for infrequent responses.

Welcome to the site.
Have you checked for codes? turn the key to on, off on, off on and look at the odometer, it should show you the codes. Did the CEL come on?
Check the codes and let us know and we will try to help you and your dad out.

Thank you for the replies so far, and the welcome to the site. I just went and cycled the key and "P 0514" was the only code that was shown.
I am not familiar with the diagnostics on these trucks. would anyone know if this code might be related to the problem?
Thanks again

Running great and then the power just dropping out on a load and not recovering is almost always the common rail pressure regulator valve if the fuel temperature is above freezing.
If the fuel in the tank is below freezing, it may well just be a cold fuel problem and letting it set in a warm garage for a few hours could solve the problem. Then add a good fuel conditioner once it is running.
It may or may not set an error code, or if it does it may not be meaningful, the best bet is to have the dealer's scan tool do the check.

The truck is running just fine! I started the truck to see if it would run after letting it sit on a trailer for a couple of days. It fired right up and didn't show any signs of hesitation. I drove it around for awhile and it never lost power or stalled.
Thanks again to all those who replied. I am just glad it appears to have been a minor issue.
Since I lent my daily driver out, it looks like I'll be driving around a pretty cool truck for awhile.

I would add some fuel conditioner to it, like PowerService. Since I started adding it to my fuel, I noticed improvements in starting, driveability and fuel economy. And no, I am not working for the company that makes it!
