need help help with diesels please

i found this website by posting on another website. i kinda need a truck right now and found a decent deal on this 1994 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel with a cummings 5.9 engine. truck also has a rebuilt transmission, i know that cost around $1250-$1500 atleast. truck has 190,000 miles. i looked on kelly blue book, this truck books for a minimum of $5300 and thats not includeing all the options. so im really considering this truck since i will be getting it for $2600-$2800. ive never owned a diesel. but before i buy it i have a few questions about diesels. are there any known problems with this model year truck or any problems with the engine. how long should i expect it to last? the guy told me it could last 400,000-500,000 miles. ive heard of diesels lasting 500,000-800,000 miles. if this is true, this 190,000 mile engine has alot of life left in it. is a cummings 5.9 known to be a good engine? and also are diesels higher maintance than gasoline engines? the guy told me the truck got 22 mpg. does that sound right? seems real good, for how much the truck weighs. thanks for any responses. i just wanna know as much information about this truck and engine before i buy it, incase i regret it.

You are asking for alot of info. I do not have time right now to type all of that, if you are in a hurry, feel free to call me (228) 761-2653 and ask for GM1 Nix. I will try to give you a low down on the truck.

Jarhead, thats really decent of you! I had a similiar positive experience when I was in the market for a diesel. The guy took time to tell me the do's and don't, the whats to look out for, etc. Extremely valuable information.

Smoke20, MAKE THE CALL! You will get info that would take hours and hours of homework! The other thing is STICK WITH THE CUMMINS! It is the reason I bought my truck period!

The more you find out, the more you will realize that cummins is the way to go. It's a work horse and then some. It takes a punishment and then asks for more!

If you need to, you are more than welcome to call me as well, but I am not as brave as JARHEAD. PM me and I will give you my number as well.

Go for it, you'll be happy for many miles. Do expect to put some money into it though. Then start reading the 12 valve forum here for tons of info.

Just like all engines diesels do have a few problems but compared to gas engines their longevity and reliability are much better. A Cummins with 190K really does have a lot of life in it. 22MPG doesn't sound unreasonable at all. Mine gets 23-24 unloaded on flat ground. In fact I bought mine with 130K miles on it. Overhauls are generally done around 350K miles but many people don't even do that, they just keep driving.

Use the search function and you can find information about anything on this forum. Good luck with the truck.

i talked to a friend the other day about this truck. learned alot more about it. but my question to you guys. considering the miles on this truck, 193,000 and a rebuilt transmission. good body but, needs a paint job. some of the paint on the hood and on the top of the cab is coming off. truck is a 2500 turbo diesel but, its only a 4x2. how much do you guys think this truck would sell for? am i really getting that great of a deal at $2600-$2800?

Yea, youre getting a pretty good deal at that price. The motor by it self is worth that.

I agree,

i got mine with 140K miles, seemed like alot, but the truck still works flawlessly.. 22-24 mpg isnt unreasonable either, its pretty good, with mine that is a 4x4 and runs on 285's i can get 21 mpg on the highway, closer to 16-18 in the city.... Paint has unfortunately never been a strong point on these trucks, even here in the "rust free" south, they still get peely and cracking and so forth.. Even so if u want a bullet proof engine, i suggest u jump on it quick, or it will be gone.. I got mine ALMOST as is for 6000 dollars, check out my photo gallery for its pics.. thanks.. and good luck with ur decision...

Sounds like a good price especially if it runs and goes down the road okay. Whether that's a lot of miles or not depends a lot on what kind of miles and most importantly did it get maintained. 193k on the original oil = not good
