Unhappy Mystery! not Shutting off.

This one is completly new to me so I thought this might be a resource.
I have a 2001 that will not shut off when the ignition key is turned off but given a little time with the key in the off position it will shut down.
I had it checked by our local 5 Star Dealer!! wow! and with the regular response they had no idea what had caused the problem. But! please remember I live in the Land of the( shall we say slow minded people) that's being very nice.

Symptoms;
1- the shifter will not come out of park.
2- the ignition switch will shut off the radio and the heater blower and it will engage the starter or you can hear it making an attempt.
3- After you put the ignition switch in the off position and leave it alone, with it still running it shuts off and then everything works fine.
It has my dealer baffled but that is not hard to do, any help would be appreciated.

I read a post somewhere that described this almost to a "tee".

I think it was starter contacts. You can rule shut down solenoids out because there are none with the VP44.

That said, maybe it's the VP?? Any codes??

Try a search, more knowledgables will most likely chime in.

Good luck!

Very likely its the starter contacts...if you can pull the starter and take a look...one of them will be really worn....

Moose,

VP44 is the electronic controlled Bosch fuel injector pump on your rig. This one came with the newer 24 valve Cummins introduced as the '98.5

Expensive to replace and not very happy with low fuel pressure/flow. Hope you run with a fuel pressure gauge.

But that's a whole other story.

If you have bad contact(s) on the starter, I think there's a risk of electrical overload and potential for fire. (not to sound like an alarmist here)

Worth a check asap.

Say Guys Thanks a bunch!
I made arrangements to have it checked and repaired today. Too **** cold here to do it myself;even with my garage the floor is -10 on these days. Maybe next time.
Taz you were talking about a fuel pressure gage? Will I be able to find the info on a search?
Thanks Again.
Ken

Oh yeah.... probably one of the more popular threads around.

There are a few configurations available, electric, mechanical etc. Many preferences to isolators and pre/post filter taps as well.

Do some reading and see whats best for you.

One of the more popular setups is the EV series from Isspro. Their offering matched the RAM gauges pretty close and the FP gauge has a decent range (30 psi on a ~15 psi system).

Good Luck with the starter.
