LP Problem..

My truck is sitting at a shop right now, cut out on me Friday night. They say they need to replace the lift pump and do the conversion to in tank. Said it'll be $809 + tax. I'm not under warranty with this truck, bought it used. I've got 92k miles on it and use it as my daily driver and to tow our 31ft camper on vacations. No mods. Looking for some advice to maybe save me a few bucks and end up with a better, more reliable pump. I'd hate to have the truck cut out on me like that again when I'm towing the camper down a mtn. pass somewhere...

as others will probably tell you if you have to spend that much on a oem pump you might as well get yourself a fass or walboro system instead. they will be about the same in price as what you are spending now, but more reliable.

The price is insane. You are getting a poor system installed at a huge cost. Pull the truck out of that shop, buy the most expensive FASS there is and you will have money left! Or for around $200 you can make your own system that is far better than the intank they will put in! Many people on this site get poor fuel pressures from in tank pumps.

Quick question? Why no warranty? The Cummins part of the warranty is 100000 miles. I don't know if the Cummins warranty needs to be transfered but if not your fuel pump would be under warranty as it is under the Cummins part of the warranty. If there is some other reason sorry for wasting your reading time, if not try another dealer or call Dodge directly and dont let the dealer beat you up.

From what I understand from the dealer, the 100k warranty from cummins covers engine and powertrane only. They said the pump doesn't fall under that.
I've informed him of what I've read here about the difference in psi between the two Dodge pumps and my concern with doing further damamge. Said he'll research it and let me know before going on with the repair, so I still have an out if it doesn't sound good. I'm about convinced on going with the FASS, but still not sure on what exactly I'd need.

I turned down the 100k extended warranty that would only cover 28k miles till I hit 100k. Figured I wouldn't get my money out of it. Had I known at the time, I might have have done differently. I can't remember what it would have run me, but it still might not have been worth it.

Warranty or not, guys, the intank setup is a bandaid over a gunshot wound. Is it worth it?

I have not heard or read about too many failures of 05 (intank) and up pump failures (retro fit for 03 to 04.5) so, for that price under warranty yes, not under warranty no it is not worth it.

Ok...so I call another dealer and it's covered. (thanks johnh and donhov) I call back to the dealership where my truck is and tell them about it...I'm mad that they almost got my money and I'm going elsewhere, not to touch my truck. "Sorry you feel that way Mr.Hall, it was an honest mistake, I didn't look it up by part number..." ***??

The other dealer came unglued when I told them what was going on. I've had the truck towed over to them now and told the first dealer goodbye.

Paul, if I had the money to spend right this second, I'd probably do it. The $800 was going to go on the credit card because it had to. I'll work on the FASS savings and guages in the meantime.. I'm new to diesels, so this is a learning experience for me.. School of hard knocks I guess.

Thanks for everyones input! I've learned quite a bit from searching and reading through posts on here.

WARRANTY.

The shop is confused. The 100K warranty does cover the LP, and does not need to be transfered from owner to owner.

Glad to hear you've got it covered. The folks are right, the 04 intank must be better than ours, I am still thinking in the second gen world

When you get it to the new dealer you may want to ask them to provide you with any original parts replaced from the fuel tank. I believe that I have heard a number of people on here comment about problems pulling fuel with the FASS or Walbro through the in-tank pump. If you keep the original in-tank setup it may save you some money & hastle down the road when you can upgrade, Just a thought.

Ask them for the original tank module. For when or if you install another fuel pump it will be much easier.
