Loosing prime?

Loosing prime?
My brother in law just called me with a problem he is having. 98.5 24 valve auto, 2500 4x4 xtra cab, stock truck, ~100,000 miles, camper loaded on truck. Truck is running fine, except when he stops and puts it in reverse it quits and won't start until he bleeds and primes it. He just changed fuel filter as he was leaving on a trip to California today from BC. He has made it as far as Seattle area where he is now experiencing this difficulty. Cel phone reception was poor but I suggested he remove the fuel filter and reinstall it as perhaps it wasn't seated properly. Any idea's out there? Thanks, Rick

He might be talking about the fuel filter canister. If that was not completely sealed, I could see that causing the motor to lose pressure/prime. However, I would say it sounds like a weak lift pump not getting enough fuel to the engine. Good luck, it sucks to have problems on the road.

Does he have a fuel pressure gauge?
The only connection I can make between an engine problem and Reverse is if his tranny is sending something bad to the ECM in reverse. I am not familiar enough with what the auto does electronically when shifted. Maybe it is malfunctioning and locks up the TC?

Thanks for the input guys. It turned out to be the lift pump which took out the vp44 also. He managed to limp into a shop in Oregon for help and was treated very well there. Don't know the name of the shop yet. Rick
