Lift pump bad ??

HELP I drained the water seperator and tried to reprime and got nothing...I asked on the chat last night and the general word was the lift pump is bad. I disconnected the pump and manually primed it and it flows fine! Now the question is Is there a pump in the tank feeding the lift pump? How can I be sure before spending the $$$. Anything else to check ??The truck is a 98 24V with around 95k on it, I am the 2nd owner so I don't know if any thing had been replaced before.

Another question: is there anywhere else to get a lift pump other than the dealer?

Thanks for the help

Re:Lift pump bad ??

Their is no pump in your tank...the LP is the only unit between your tank and the LP, therefore it has alot of stress on it...the only way to properly check your LP is to do a fuel pressure check...if it's the original one their is a good chance it may be weak..

Re:Lift pump bad ??

I replaced my fuel filter last week and my 01 truck would not start . I tried bleeding the system by loosening the banjo bolt at the Injector pump and bumping the starter. I could hear the lift pump run but no fuel. I took out the filter to see if I did something wrong and noticed that the housing had the same amount of fuel as it did when I replaced the filter. I then bumped the starter with the filter out and no fuel entered the housing ( This could be a messy test if your lift pump is good) I knew then that my LP was bad. I did try filling the housing with fuel all the way as a final measure but no go. I replaced the LP and installed a pressure guage and she started right up. Basically the injector pump was keeping the system primed and when I changed the filter the prime was gone never to return until the LP was changed. the LP itself when working is supposed to be a self priming pump. My advice is to install a guage asap.

You may want to see if Dodge will do it under warranty, since you are below 100k miles.

Thanks for all of the help...$210 later and she is running just fine.
What is up with the 100K warranty Firestorm...is that on all CTD's?? I did buy the LP from the dealer and they did not say a word (like they would) about it. I saved the old LP and reciepts so any info you have would be great.

Re:Lift pump bad ??

100K or 5 yrs. You're probably past or very close to the 5 yr. mark. If your truck is less than 5 yr. from date of sale and under 100k that lift pump would be covered under warranty. I'd be putting the pressure on them. If you bought the truck used your local dealer can find the original sale date in the computer.

Mine only has one month to go. Original LP was changed at 45k. If this one is going to go I wish it would do it very soon.

Re:Lift pump bad ??

i tried to get my LP covered under the factory 100k warr. because the readings were weak and they said the part was in the acceptable limits...I wound up buying on my own from Cummins dealer...i'm w/ you bearfoot, about a month or two to go on the warr. then i hit the 5 yr mark :'(

If you let them put it on, you'd be risking a return trip.
