Killed by dowell pin
Killed by dowell pin
Today when my brother was pulling into the jobsite I noticed alot of oil dripping from the front of his 97 12v. Popped the hood and after a minute of looking around I noticed that his timing case was split and spitting oil. (all over me as a matter of fact) His KDP went, and I hated to do it but I told him so. Now he needs me, cause I got a computer, to find out where to get the best deal on a new timing case and maybe some step by step instructions on fixing the problem. Can any one point me in the right direction to find detailed information on this repair. I need him to pull the skidsteer to a job on Wed and his truck is down. Can this repair be done that quickly?
Not an easy fix by any means.I don't think they give away the gear housings either.Got to pull the cam too.Cummins here in california quoted me around 1500 bucks just to fix the gasket behind the housing. Good luck, someone here with more knowledge will chime in soon..
Kits are made to prevent the problem, not to fix it after it happens.
Buy parts from Cummins, unless you can find a used one your only other choice is the dealer. Unless there is gear damage the only parts you will need are the case, gaskets, front seal and a new dowel pin.
Heres what's involved in the repair http://www.flex.net/~triplem/new/dowelpin.htm

good gawd, if the link to the repair doesn't make you go get the prevent kit right away and install it instantly then sheesh, you can't be helped.looks like a long day for your and your brother, save the cold ones till the job is finished, ya might mess up more than is already fubar otherwise..........

As long as the cover isn't in too many pieces and you have those pieces, and if there are no gears FUBAR'ed, you can do like we did on my buddy's 97. took the front cover off and looked at all the gears to make sure there was no screwy things going on, then we JB welded the cover back together, put a new gasket and seal on the crank, and it works like a dream! might want to change the oil soon after just in case you drop some gasket in the pan or something.
