Wow. I better tell my buddy that has well over 700,000 miles on his FACTORY VP about this.

I am talking about the alen head bolt that is just below the banjo bolt and toward the front of the truck. I do have an electric guage and it was just put in about two weeks ago. I think I will soon upgrade but for now I think I had better spend my money on a Fass or I might install a holley black that I have laying around along with a big line kit.

I had same symptoms as you when I changed the lift pump. Pressure seemed ok, then dropped to zero when I got on it. Turns out that when I tightened the flexible line that provides fuel to the pump, I put a slight kink in it. Worked ok at low demand, but at higher revs the suction from the pump would collapse the line and I'd end up with 0 PSI. Fixed it and all was good. Until, that is, I got a bad load of diesel in Guernsey Wyo. Plugged the filter. Resulted in similar symptoms. Took it easy for a bit, then changed the filter when I filled up next. Seems to have done the trick.

You are not in the right place, you really need to get either a tapped banjo bolt or a tapped fuel filter cover or something of that nature. Your sender needs to be in the fuel line going to the VP44, anywhere between the filter and the pump itself. Closer to the filter is probably better to avoid killing the sender from the pulsations of the VP44. A tapped banjo bolt will set you back less than $10.
