Injector pump problems
Injector pump problems
I found this site last week and joined up after skimming help forum section. I had all but diagnosed my ailment (blue smoke and no power) in my 2002 ctd as a lift pump failure. But after taking to dealer they informed me it had no fault codes, (which I found b4 taking to dealer a p1693). After discussing with tech at dealer, he proceeded to drive truck and informed me that the injector pump was shot. He had to order from Detroit and I am currently waiting deliver thereof. My question is do the injector pumps seem to be a frequent failing item similar to the lift pump??? Or am I just blessed to have mine fail??? BTW it has 73K miles on it... Thank God for Cummins 100K warranty!!! Dealer says that this component would cost me $2K to have installed. I thought this was a bit steep, but this is my 1st diesel so little do I know.
Re:Injector pump problems
Your question can have many answers from yes to no as a reply. From what I can see, your truck is stock, meaning no modifications to the engine ( performance boxes , etc...), your chances are definitely lower because your stock, however, their are guys on this site that get 250k out of their pumps and some that got 20k out of their pumps. Their are some things you can do to prolong pump life, some additives that can be added during fuel stops on the market can help "lubricate" the pump and can help prolong it's life...Since the bigger cause of a pump failing is lack of fuel/pressure, you could get a fuel gauge so you could monitor it. I would check the Lift Pump anyway to ensure it's pressure readings are good and your filter is clean, again, lack of fuel (which lubricates the pump) is a big killer of injection pumps. a weak lift pump can loose almost all fuel pressure under heavy throttle......good luck and welcome to the site
Re:Injector pump problems
Barracuda, Thanks for the response. Yes it is totally stock and I am waiting till the Cummins warranty expires b4 adding any performance goodies. The tech has just called me back since I posted this and told me that they are replacing the lift pump along with the injector pump. He said they were getting marginal readings on the lift pump discharge. As far as additives go, I have been adding a diesel additive every other tank in order to inhibit microbial growth in the tank and to lubricate the fuel system. Thanks again!
Re:Injector pump problems
As already explained the injection pump (VP44 and VE) use the diesel fuel for lubrication and cooling. If the lift pump becomes weak and the inlet pressure to the injector pump starts to fall, the injector pump will start to loose lubrication and eventually fail as yours did. Typically the lift pump goes (hard starts, little less performance) and then the big pump goes. If you can keep an eye on the lift pump at all, it will save you problems in the future.

Re:Injector pump problems
I lost my VP44 at 4,000 miles.
Totally stock at the time. (pretty much still is)
No codes, lift pump was and still is fine.
Luck of the draw I guess.
Without my truck for almost a week, takes forever to get warranty ok'd, part shipped, then installed.
Sorry you are without your truck, but glad you were abe to get it covered under warranty (as was I)
I'm pretty sure I got a remanufactured pump, which I'm sure is better than original, since all "bad" parts have been replaced. You most likely got a reman'd one as well, back when I got mine replaced, Bosch was saying they're not making them anymore, just fixing up the bad ones.
