idles to fast

just got back from short trip about 30 miles total and when i lift my truck was idling 950 rpms, and it would die if i started in 2nd gear. any way it done this the entire trip. when i got home took black cover off the thottle linkage gunned it several times thinking maybe something was stuck, still 950 rpms. anybody got any ideas runs fine when you get in the thottle, and go thought the gears?

Coworker was experiencing this, it turned out to be his crankshaft position sensor.

anyway to check that part and where is it located on the engine?
