Hub Problem on 90 250--Burning up???

Hey everyone my cousin has a 1990 250 Cummins with 4x4. When he was driving home on the interstate there were several times when he said the truck would pull really hard to the right. This was within the last 20 mins of his drive, and once in town he made a hard right turn into a parking lot and he said it felt like the front right wheel locked up and made him skid around. After that he checked things over again and noticed the front hub where it sticks out for the lock in part was really hott and the other side was not. He doesn't think that its the brake on that side.

He just had the steering bracket replaced a few weeks ago when it broke out but said everything with it looked alright/tight.

I have advised him to PARK it and have it towed down so I can work/look at it in the morn.

If anyone knows if the hub would cause the steering problems or if we need to look at something else, but I am wondering if that is where the problem with his 4x4 is. Because it was working until a few weeks ago but haven't had time to really mess with it.

I could really use info on what to do with the hub(if this is the prob), is there a repair kit??
Any help is appreciated....Kevin

I have no idea, is that where you have to take them apart and re-pack them??? I was hoping that might be all we need to do.

Anyone else have idea's????? I think I will try to grease the hub on that side but it may be messed up if it got really hot. Not sure if this would effect the steering though....

Would like to fix this over the weekend due to it being his DD for work.

Hub is possible, but a stuck caliper is more likely. The caliper slides are exposed to the elements and it's not uncommon for the calipers to get hung up on rust.

If raise the offending tire off of the ground you should be able to isolate the problem. If you grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to rock it in and out it should not move. If it does move I would start with the wheel bearing, and if there is noticeable movement you will probably need to replace the bearings.
If there is no movement in and out, try turning the wheel. If the brake is hanging up you will be able to feel it as you rotate the tire.
If the wheel bearing is shot, it to will hang up as you rotate the tire but it will feel like there is grit or gravel in there.
Hope this helps.

Well I don't even know where to start with my findings----all a messs!!!

Took off the lock out hub part---all broke off inside---new hubs needed.

First axle nut was loose from someone not putting it on with the right tools before--spun off by hand, then the second one was WELDED on. Cut in 4 places to finally break free. Then the part that supposed to be hold in what I think was supposed to be a wheel bearing??? Where they were all laying, I think its a receiver?? It was welded on.....cut 4 times and still has part stuck on.

So now I think we need a new spindle also, took off 6 bolts on it but couldn't break it loose, does anyone have any tricks???? I was using a sledge but we decided to quit and wait to look for someone who knew what they were doing.lol

So the damage is----4wd hub---wheel bearing---axle nut---receiver deal--spindle. Needless to say, hope tomorrow is better!!!!
