'91 dodge 250 vs '99 ford 250

I am going to race a '99 ford powerststroke, automatic, reg cab, 2 wheel drive 250,with a 140 hp tst chip, shift kit, with a 5'' straght pipe, for a tank of diesel. Do you think I can beat him in the 1/4 mile? Should I tune my pump any different for this? Also how should I take off to get my tires to stick? Any and all input is greatly appeciated

many thanks again

I'd say based on his auto alone, it is going to be a tough one to cut, esp if your Getrag has gotten cranky in its age, and doesnt take too well to fast shifts. I'd say start in 3rd if you had 4.10s, but with the 3.54s, you may be stuck with 2nd. Run it til the boost gauge falls off, then grab another gear, and mash down. You cant shift as fast as an auto, and once they get moveing, the chipped PSDs will haul. But, if he has a top end limiter of <120, you may have it.

Have the terms been set in stone? If not, challenge him to hooking up 10-12K (evenly, of course, dont give him too bad a beating if you got the 12K, and he only 10K) behind each rig and see what they do.

I personally wont run any autos- 4 second shifts dont do well in dragging.

remember Clint Eastwood said

"A man's got to know his limitations"

IMHO I'd say forget it, the auto and a 140 TST is enough for trouble.

I doubt you'd get it. You may beat him off the line, but he will smoke you when the RPM's come up. These getrags are not the best at the slam shifting racing.

Now, if it were in the 1/8 mile, you would have a better chance, my old 91 would kick my 02 Cummins with an EZ for the first 1200 ft, but not after that.

If you try it, start in 3rd.

How should I tune my pump for this, for best spool up and take off,(star wheel, smoke screw, fuel screw, fuel pin, afc lever, afc spring, etc...)?

I think your tuned pretty well IMHO. I would work on rowing that getrag for all she's worth. I have power shifted mine a few times and she doesn't like it at all. I got pretty good at keeping the turbo spooled between the shifts, but you need to make sure that the tranny is nice and warmed up and shifting really smoothly. Off the line I think that it might be tough, most of my "speed" comes on when I get into third. Like wannadiesel said, if you can start in 3rd, go for it.

Run propane...well, maybe not. How about a gentleman's bet instead?

That tst chip is the same chip my brother in law has in his truck. He destroyed his tranny the first night we took it out. It probably had something to do with the 38x16 tires with stock gears though. Any way if the ps has stock tires and a tranny that will hold that power you're only wasting fuel. I hate to say it but you won't stand a chance. I'm not a ps fan but that chip makes them animals. Make sure you air your tires down a little to help with traction and don't drop your tailgate contrary to popular belief, it doesn't make you more aerodynamic. I hope everything goes good. I would pay money to see an old first gen bring it to a chipped ps.

By the way if you lose this drag race it's no big deal. Just take him to a sled pull and bet to see who can go further. It seems like no matter what's done to a ps they never out yank a cummins.

DennyT beat a 6.0 with an auto in his 92. I think it was close to stock but thats still not bad becous his was to and he has a 5 speed. It was just a light to light thing but the Ford started it. I think all it had at the time was a HX35-12cm and some pump work and 33" BFG's.
