Help - sputters and dies!!!

2004.5 RAM 3500 - 47,000 miles

So here I was driving the other day and all of a sudden she sputtered a little then died on me....I pull over and bump the key a little and she starts and idles for about a second or two then dies out again.
This has happened twice now and seems to happen when I am driving a little harder than normal and also edge setting on either 1 or 3.

Last night when it happened I could not get in fired after cranking engine for about 5 seconds several time so I drained the water seperator valve on fuel filter and put edge setting back to stock bumped key a few times and she fired and got me home some how ???
Is this a edge problem or what ???? Please I need help as I am planning on heading out of town soon and don't want to be stranded.

Thanks for looking

Mine did the same thing. Check for codes. Mine was associated with the lift pump: "low voltage detected at fuel lift pump", I think it's P0628. I wiggled wires and managed to get it running. The replacement should be covered by the dealership under the engine warranty. They'll replace the current pump with an in-tank style pump. Good Luck,
Adam

For codes does the check engine light have to be on ?? Mine has not come on at all yet or will there be a code still without the chk light ??

Some codes will be set without the light coming on.
Pretty sure on the '04s the turning the key on and off three times without starting then leaving the key on will give you the set codes in the odometer.

You can get the codes on an 04 with the 3 key turn option. Yours should be under warranty unless it gets voided by your Edge, which it very well might.

wow you guys are good....I did the key thing 3 times and it did show the P0628 code. Now I take it that it's a faulty fuel lift pump ?
If so I am off to do some research but would appreciate any feedback and/or comments.
Thanks
What I don't get is why would the chk engine light not come on and why is the truck running normal today?

The check engine light only comes on when the computer programmers in their infinite wisdom decided which problems don't warrant the light.
There are also some codes the programmers call "hard codes". These are codes they deemed so important for safety, like brakes for instance, that codes can only be erased with a scan tool or a high number of start stop cycles, usually 75 or more.
Your P0628 code can be erased by just disconnecting the batteries for awhile.

ok well then if I need to replace the pump what do you guys recommend ??
I don't plan on doing much with the truck as in HP besides the Edge as I usually only run on level 3 but wouldn't mind trying 4 or 5 occasionally......

I think mine is currently mounted to the filter housing under engine and I would like the easiest possible fix

I'd recomend an Airtex. get the kit with the relacte option. Mount it on the frame rail right under the drivers seta. You'l be able to faintly hear it buzz every morning so you know it's working. Also get a fuel pressure gauge and install it permanantly where you can watch it easily at all times. It will tell you as the pump gets weak and you wont have to go thru this diagnosis again.

After researching lift pumps I seem more confused now than ever but I need to get this done asap so I was thinking of either the Airdog 100 or Raptor 100 or Walbro (don't know much about this one)

What do you guys think ?? I hope I don't have to drop my tank as I have the 04.5 and not too mechanically inclined but I should be able to handle this

I've heard a FASS run before. It was very loud. Thats why I put an Airtex on my 99. Sounded like a massive fish tank air pump. If you need to add the draw straw (drop the tank) it will probably be easier to remove the bed bolts and lift up one side, prop it with a 2X4 and do the install.

with that few miles you probably have warranty(5 years or 100,000 cummins engine warranty)
