Hi to D.T.O. and jec3.

I have a 97 3/4 Cummins (130,000 mi) that I have had the same issues as D.T.O. (intermittent tach), and a couple of other symptoms that I think are all related. While driving, and it doesn't matter about speed, load, etc., periodically the tach will drop to zero, or bounce, and the engine will feel as though it is "freewheeling". I can tap the throttle pedal, and the problem immediately stops. It may not occur again for days, or it may be back in 2 minutes. Additionally, when I have set the cruise control, it may suddenly drop out. Most of the time, the RPM simply slows as the speed slows. A couple of times have been the opposite - when the speed control drops out, the engine actually rev's up. I also experience a periodic no-start condition, but I don't think it is the dreaded hose because it can happen even 5 seconds after turning off the ignition. I have found that most of the time, removing the key from the ignition and reinserting it will get the truck started again after a couple of tries. I suppose this could be related to the problem you have previously described.

I have taken my pickup to the dealer for the cruise control problem, where the mechanic assured me that the symptoms I described were not possible, and he could not find any code that would help determine the cause of the tach/power problems.

Since I am not a mechanic, how do I find the codes that you talk about, and determine if my problem is the same as yours?
